Why homicide rates are falling across the country
The Hill ^ | Apr 21, 2024 | ALEX GANGITANO

Homicides are falling across the U.S. And that shift could impact the role crime — often a top voter concern — plays as an issue in November’s election.

But it is a phenomenon for which experts don’t have a clear explanation.

Some say homicide peaks come and go in cycles, some say policing improved after the COVID-19 pandemic, and some attribute it to the evolving national conversation about how to handle crime.

A data analysis released last week shows that the number of homicides in cities like Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, are dropping.

While many major cities, especially those run by Democrats with liberal-leaning policies and populations, have received backlash from Republicans for being inundated with violent crime, the new data paints a picture of an improving situation.

Experts, though, aren’t agreed on exactly why the number of homicides has fallen so far, so fast.

Boston saw the sharpest decline from 2023 to 2024, with homicides dropping by 82 percent. In Philadelphia, homicides dropped by 37 percent; in Dallas, homicides dropped by 27 percent; and in Chicago, homicides dropped by 6 percent, according to estimates from city police department reports compiled by AH Datalytics.

My initial reaction is that the numbers are being cooked. Some definition changed, reporting criteria changed, etc. in preparation of the election.

Yep. It’s all about classification of a death(s).

In the end it’s all about politics and in some cases, getting federal money in some manner.

I expect to see all kinds of book cooking in the next 6 months.

Crime down.
The economy is great.
The border is secure.
Food and fuel prices are down.

All lies.

As with elections, it’s about who does the counting.

I don't know. Maybe they only report it as homicide if the arrest the perp, and they are not arresting perps nowadays, therefore, they aren't reporting murder as murder?

I have noticed that law enforcement now almost always finds the guy they are looking for. My take is that there are new methods of finding perps that we haven’t learned about.

Never say can’t when politics are involved, truth just get in the way.

However, the death can be transferred to another area outside the city, it can be categorized suicide, natural causes, unknown causes, happened last year, etc. Just like with jobs reports, they can be updated later.

Here’s what jumps out at me: The Headline and article refer to “homicides,” but the statistical data upon which the article is based refers to “murders.” Although all murders are homicides, not all homicides are murders. For example, in my state, there are twelve types of criminal homicide, but only three of them are classified as “murder.” I suspect that liberal district attorneys are classifying murders as lower level homicides such as manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide.

The reporting method changed in the last few years for index crimes. Because of that a lot of agencies are incorrectly reporting their numbers, or not reporting them at all.

Exactly .... once the media 'goes' conservative/traditional ..

Believe the opposite.

The good news is that most in America believe their own eyes and ears more than ever, and just plain ignore any mainstream news outlets that I have witnessed in my 55 years on earth.

The bad news is that these same people are so disgusted that they are dropping out and have NO hope in the election process with EITHER party and/or the blatant stealing of key elections throughout the country. Therefore, the hope for a true, critical mass to correct things with this course of action is all but lost, save His direct intervention.

It's Abagail Adams time ... I fear ...

From one of our Founding Mothers:

"Heaven only knows what is next to take place but it seems to me the Sword is now our only, yet dreadful alternative, and the fate of Rome will be renued in Brittain."

“I have noticed that law enforcement now almost always finds the guy they are looking for. My take is that there are new methods of finding perps that we haven’t learned about.”

all you have to do is watch “The First 48” and “Forensic Files” to see why killers are now so easily caught and convicted ...

Top six: video cameras everywhere, cell phone and auto GPS tracking, tip lines, facebook and other online postings by killers, fingerprints, DNA, and stupid killers either confessing or unknowingly tripping themselves up during “interviews” with physiologically trained homicide detectives

and if that isn’t enough, scientific forensic analysis of materials and substances proving their connection between the victim and the killer is mind-blowing ...

Reporting crimes to the federal database became voluntary under Biden. The major crime cities aren’t reporting all of their crimes. Of course the reported crime rates will fall if only the federal database is used.
