Trump-Reagan Fusion Can Win the New Cold War

Since Donald Trump’s rise within Republican ranks, conservatives have divided into two competing foreign policy camps. One contends that Trump’s approach suits the world in which we live and supersedes previous GOP national security and foreign affairs outlooks. A smaller contingent contends that Ronald Reagan’s understanding of America and his conduct of diplomacy remain the gold standard for U.S. foreign policy.

Atlantic Council colleagues Matthew Kroenig (also a Georgetown professor of government and international relations) and Dan Negrea contend that considerably more agreement about foreign affairs prevails among conservatives than they themselves realize. When fleshed out, a Trump-Reagan fusion represents, they persuasively maintain in their new book, “the foreign policy synthesis around which the Republican Party can coalesce.”

Taking their title from Ronald Reagan’s succinct 1977 statement of his stance toward the Cold War, Kroenig and Negrea argue in “We Win, They Lose: Republican Foreign Policy and the New Cold War” (the acknowledgements thank me although I contributed at most encouragement), that the United States has been thrust into the New Cold War by the People’s Republic of China. Trump administration veterans – Kroenig in the Defense Department and Negrea in the State Department – the authors maintain that Trump’s 2017 National Security Strategy rightly recognized that America had already entered an era of great-power competition with Russia as well as with China.

Retarded. Back then we were the world’s creditor nation. Now we are the biggest debtor in all of human history. And then the USSR was the aggressor, today it’s us.
This is the neocon Uke EU Atlantic Council trying to co-opt Ronald Reagan and pretend he would approve of their war mongering and globalism.

Anything from the Atlantic Council or Georgetown is pure deep-state bull-puckey

When Reagan was President, the USA had little debt, it was still a global creditor, it had all the world’s high-tech in its control, and it could still be considered a Christian nation. All of that has gone 180 degrees in the opposite direction.

Our adversary was a bloated, ossified, debt-racked marxist country, run by an ideologue deep-state, which appointed life-long, corrupt, senile party hacks to leadership, and which had spent itself funding wars and revolution around the world.

Sorry to tell you all, but WE are the bloated (Neo) marxists now - and if Reagan were alive today, he would agree.

Trump is the direction we need today. America first, focus on our needs, and be friendly traders with the world, not seeking hostility. Opening our doors to them based upon their behavior.

Neocon Atlantic Council needs to die off and quit pretending they carry the torch of Reagan forward.

We may have clashed on other items, but on this, you are spot on.

Very well stated my brother, very well done indeed!

It’s MAGA now, baby!

Atlantic Council liberals who hated Reagan at the time are now trying to use Reagan to attach NeoCon Globalism to America First.

“New Cold War”?

Looks like the Neo-Cons are always dreaming up some boogeyman for us to fight. Foreign wars are nice distractions from problems at home.

Trump and/or Reagan could fix this, first however, it would require getting all the NeoCons OUT of government and government agencies entirely, and most of the Democrats INTO prison disqualified to vote.

Make America Great Again!

Amazing... the entire article was BS.
It was a love letter to globalism and progressives. And it ended with a suggestion that we transition away from fossil fuels and “expand pathways for immigration” to help us in our “struggle against China”. It was a tour de force in neoconism.

It also trotted out alliances, and the old saw “Reagan’s defense build-up, which hastened the Soviet Union’s demise, is a classic case of achieving peace by preparing for war.”

That is very simplistic. Star Wars, or our 80s military buildup didn’t didn’t end the USSR. It was an element but a small one. John Paul II was a primary cause by inspiring Poland. By the 80s, the USSR was staggering ossified old man on the verge of collapse. The 80s in Europe and America were flat out fun. The music, MTV, blue jeans, etc. All of that got through the wall and everyone there was pretty well aware of how the other half of the planet lived.
Our culture and their people’s desire for it did as much as the 80s military buildup.
Reagan creating the 80s quality of life in the west probably did more. And the Helsinki Agreement on refusenik immigration was also huge.

Our culture defeated them. This article thinks more alliances and military build ups is what we need today.
What they need to see is that our culture is in the sewer now and is not superior.

THAT is what needs to be addressed. End the feminism, the faggotry, the wokeism, the racism, and the state atheism. Then we can face the world.

“Matthew Kroenig is an American political scientist and national security strategist currently serving as vice president of the Atlantic Council”

And was born around 78 or 79. Just who we need he hear an assaholic lecture on Reagan from.

I do not think Trump is real peacenik.
He won the war on ISIS and did not pulled out of Afghanistan.
I do not think he pulled out of any country?! (Name some if you know).

What he did is that he really wanted to win!
The worst problem of US foreign involvements is not going there, but failing to fight to win!
Even in Korea and definitely since Vietnam, we are fighting to win the soul of them.
That means we are limiting ourselves to all kind of rules, whose basically guarantee we will be stuck there for a long while and eventually loose.

Trump fight against ISIS was finally fought the way we should fight all the time. Just go there, destroy them, forget mosques, cemeteries or civilians.
Destroy them, place some puppet government there and get out!
I know a lot of Vietnam veterans who are pissed off about fighting with one hand tied behind their backs!

The article is two state department, three atlantic council, two Harvards and a Cornell, one Knights Of Malta, investment banker. One was making mudpies during Reagan.

This is the most globalist bunch possible. And they dare speak Reagan’s name.

"I do not think he pulled out of any country?! (Name some if you know)."

IIRC, Trump and SOS Pompeo had discussions with the Taliban about when and how our exit from Aftganiscrap would occur. They told the Taliban if any American or ally is killed or harmed during the exit or even after, they would experience a "hell on Earth like no one has seen since WWII.", or words to that effect. Trump and Pompeo set a latter date for a smooth transitional withdrawal. All were agreed.

Of course, Biteme just couldn't go along with anything Trump and moved up the date for withdrawal. The Taliban saw that as breaking the agreement and we all saw on TV the resulting debacle at the airport and the resulting loss of American and other lives.

I don't think I'm too far off with this, but yes, Trump had already put in motion our exit from that crap country. America was ready to get out of there after 20 years of failed nation building. I agreed with Trump about cutting our losses getting the hell out of that savage tribal black hole. I was sick of seeing our best come home in a coffin or maimed for life. For what?

"I know a lot of Vietnam veterans who are pissed off about fighting with one hand tied behind their backs!"

I do too. But that wasn't because of tribalism in South Viet Nam. They wanted to remain a free state like South Korea. It was because of the micro-management by Johnson and McNamara, and the BS from Cronkite and the peaceniks. May they all rot in hell.

Don't believe me? Cronkite reported the Tet Offensive as a win for the North, when in fact, General Giap said in his own biography that he was ready to pull the plug and end the war after what he considered a failed Tet Offensive. However, since the American anti-war sentiment was expanding, he decided to continue his aggression.

Yes!
The media was almost in cahoots with the North (they always like leftists!), and the micromanagement from White House was terrible.

Back to Afghanistan, after first wave of attacks in 2001, they spotted Mullah Omar with his entourage somewhere. But they had to get approval from Washington, and when they finally got it, mullah was gone!
At that moment, I knew we will loose again!

The people of Georgia, Ukraine, the Philippines, and Viet Nam have entered the chat.
