Commentary: How measles reemerged as a threat in California and elsewhere

The measles virus is resurging in the U.S. despite the long-standing availability of a vaccine that provides nearly life-long immunity. In the past few weeks, hundreds of people were exposed to a child with the virus in a Northern California healthcare facility; our state is one of 17 jurisdictions with reported measles cases in 2024, higher than seen in recent years.

Policy can worsen the issue. Last month in Florida, following an outbreak at an elementary school, the state's surgeon general left the decision to parents whether to send their children to school, citing high levels of community immunity as the rationale for not following the usual protocols. That cavalier response risked a much worse outbreak. A more standard response would have called for unvaccinated students and staff to be vaccinated and quarantine for 21 days (the time frame in which the disease could develop).

Funny story. In my first year of college in the early 80’s living on campus, there was a measles outbreak. A vaccine campaign was launched, optional of course. I and some guys in my dorm got the idea to don surgical masks during the next football game. Our pictures made it in the student paper.

A local news station in the Twin Cities had a brief story about this a few days ago.

The station quoted the CDC in saying that the spread of measles was caused by international travellers.

The MSM just can’t bring themselves to say the obvious.

It was people who traveled abroad and brought it back with them. Yes some illegals but mostly Americans traveling who are not vaccinated.

Yeah. I friend of ours is an ER nurse in a local large health system. That health system restored the mask mandate in November (recently rescinded), due to an increase in "respiratory diseases". Our friend told us it was actually because of TB in the illegals.

To be fair, people who don’t vaccinate with the old time standard childhood vaccines are depending on not being exposed. That’s on them and their poor logic.

Anytime measles vax rates fall below 85%, you end up with outbreaks.
