Joe Biden won big in Michigan primary, but ‘uncommitted’ votes signaled potential trouble

President Joe Biden won the Michigan Democratic presidential primary in a landslide, capturing around 80 percent of the votes, as of 11:00 p.m; Tuesday.

The incumbent president’s victory was widely anticipated in the key swing state. But the Michigan primary also acted as a litmus test for Biden’s standing with essential Democratic voter bases, especially amid heightened tensions about his administration’s handling of the war in Gaza.

Over the past few months, Michigan, which has a significant Arab American voter population, became the breeding ground of several anti-Biden campaigns, urging voters to cast “uncommitted” ballots in protest of the Gaza war.

The “uncommitted” vote turned into Biden’s main Michigan challenger. As of 11 p.m. Tuesday night, around 13% of voters had chosen “uncommitted,” a higher rate than some Democrats had predicted.

“Four years ago, it was Michigan’s diverse coalition that came together to reject Donald Trump’s MAGA extremism and sent me and Kamala to the White House,” Biden said in a statement Tuesday night.

“This fight for our freedoms, for working families, and for Democracy is going to take all of us coming together. I know that we will,” he said.

In January, Biden landed the endorsement of the Detroit-based United Auto Workers union, a crucial win for any candidate vying for the battleground state. The union has 400,000 active members and over 580,000 retired members, many of whom live in Michigan.

As I said on an earlier thread, yes Dearbornistan voted “uncommitted” as a protest against Biden, but make no mistake that they will vote for Biden in the general election because Rashida Tlaib is also on the ballot for reelection.

This analysis simply doesn't make much sense. A double-digit percentage in Michigan voted "uncommitted" in 2012 vs. Barack Obama. Furthermore, Romney and the GOP primary overall got way, way more voter participation than the Democratic one.

Last I checked, Barack Obama coasted in 2012. Was an easy reelection.

13% ‘Uncommitted”. Ok. So why can’t they just put it in the headline and save us the time spent to read the whole article?

I do believe I’ve answered my own question.

Can anyone remember an incumbent president running for re-election that was defeated in the primaries?

Yup. But if by some “miracle” Sickie Haley was able to be the Republican nominee, MAGA won’t vote for her. FOR SURE! So just that fact exposes her real agenda, damage Trump. As far as Braindead is concerned, if he bails and Kommiela becomes president, she’ll pick my glorious guv Newsance. Which will have to be selected by the Senate.

Normally when an incumbent president is running for re-election the primaries are a snooze. Obviously there have been a few exceptions but 2012 was not one of them.

I could not find any articles on the substance of the Democratic primary that year—apparently it was of very low interest with obviously low turnout.

There may have been some local issue where Obama ticked off some Democrats—but I have no idea what it was.

Haley was able to be the Republican nominee, MAGA won’t vote for her.

That is the goal.

LBJ would have been defeated in the 1968 primaries—the polling numbers showed that—and that was the reason he bailed.

The only other serious challenge in the modern era was Edward Kennedy challenging incumbent Jimmy Carter in 1980.

This is an example of why any third party freaks out the Democrats so much.

Muslims could vote for local Democrats and then vote third party on the presidential line.

Many who were talked to by pollsters and reporters said that was exactly what they were going to do.

Voter discipline in the Democratic Party is absolute when it actually counts.

Any Conservative or Republican who thinks otherwise is delusional.

Trump winning Michigan will be a heavy lift. It’s very blue. He lost it by more than 154,000 votes in 2020 and the uncommitted votes were only 100,000, most of whom will vote Dem in the end. I think putting Tim Scott on the ticket might help. Detroit is 90% black and that is really the Dem stronghold.

You can’t do demographic analysis on a stolen election.

It is like analyzing poker hands in a mob poker game.

Don’t do it.
