President Biden suggested Israel will be willing to halt its war in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, but only if a deal to release hostages held by Hamas is reached.
“Ramadan’s coming up and there has been an agreement by the Israelis that they would not engage in activities during Ramadan as well, in order to give us time to get all the hostages out,” Biden said Monday on NBC’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
As concerns have risen globally over Israel’s potential invasion of the southern city of Rafah in Gaza — where many Palestinians have sheltered there among the war — Ramadan, which begins March 10, is perceived as an unofficial deal deadline.
Biden, however, said he thinks Israel has decelerated the bombardment of Rafah, according to The Associated Press

When I lived and worked in KSA, the locals slept most of their shortened hours during the day, with long faces, then porked out every night, to the extent that when Nouri came to work in a thobe, instead of western clothes, and I asked him if it was a ‘picture day’ he said no, that he had gained too much weight during Ramadan to wear his western clothes.

Whether for good or ill, I don’t think that there is any single authority over the hostages. Agreement to release them is agreement among the various factions and leaders who are holding them, and none want to give up their “edge”.
If there is some let up in the bombardment of Rafah, it is, hopefully, so that Israeli troops can go in.

I was wondering why Israel saw an advantage to having Biden state this publicly on network tv; perhaps the Israelis did not ask Bidens people to speculate out loud about this?
