It is possible that Abbott may have strengthened his border stance to place himself for Trump’s consideration as a Vice Presidential running mate. Alternatively, he may have had a “come to Jesus” moment and done the right thing as a result.

He was kind enough to get arrested and convicted and jailed for Sedition in 1918. He was protesting the draft and President Wilson sikked the Feds on him.

Well, Mr. Debs was still in jail campaigning for President of the United States on the Socialist Party in the election of 1920.
Not only was he on the ballot everywhere—he actually did rather well for a third party candidate winning 3.4% of the vote.

If he sails through the primaries uncontested he will have a tremendous mandate. Even a token challenge from Haley is better than no challenge at all.
The uniparty can exploit any divisions and play factions against each other. With no divisions, they have no leverage..
