Two outbursts from the sun occurred as widespread cellphone outages were reported throughout the United States on Thursday (Feb. 22).
Two powerful solar flares erupted from the sun on the evening of Wednesday (Feb. 21) and during the early morning of Thursday (Feb. 22). An X1.8-class flare occurred at 6:07 p.m. ET (2307 GMT) on Feb. 21, and another, an X1.7 class flare, erupted at 1:32 a.m. ET (0632 GMT) on Feb. 22. The flares erupted from a region of the sun that "continues to exhibit strong magnetic complexity," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) wrote in a statement about the events.
"No apparent CMEs resulting from these events have been observed as of the time of this writing, but can not be ruled out," the agency added. Nevertheless, NOAA issued an alert today for a solar radio emission at 6:58 a.m. ET (1158 GMT), which are sometimes joined by strong coronal mass ejections (CME) and solar radiation storms.
Meanwhile, nationwide throughout the United States, widespread cellular outages were reported on Thursday morning following the solar flares. According to The Associated Press, tens of thousands of outages were reported by major cellular carriers such as AT&T, Verzion and T-Mobile.
It remains unclear if the two events are related, but reports of outages appeared to begin around the same time as the solar flares.

I’m waiting for a Carrington Event.
“’end of the world’”
Is this what they will tell us when they cut off the internet?
can you hear me now .....?
God giving us a Heads Up......................
Targeting a specific carrier?
I think they’re talking this up because they’re going to shut down the internet and/or the grid on orders from China. Our country will fall into chaos and China will march in to assist us and will never leave.
Would solar flares for some reason only affect ATT cellular service?
Was the U.S. the only country impacted by solar flares? Not Canada, not Mexico? Nowhere else in the Northern Hemisphere? How about the Southern Hemisphere?
If the U.S. was the only country impacted, then it wasn’t solar flares.
At least, not in my book.
Yeah...that’s what I was wondering. Just ATT???
Solar flares deferentially attack AT&T?
Hmmmm. My phone was fine.
It’s interesting that the cell phone outages mainly affected the eastern US. I wonder if the solar flare hit when that part of the earth was facing the sun. I wonder if there were similar coincident outages in Europe, UK, Greenland, Iceland, Newfoundland, Labrador, etc.
An outage caused by the sun burping is about as believable as gas prices rising because some ayatollah shit his diaper.
It’s either going to be the northern hemisphere or the southern hemisphere, not both.
I don’t think the timing was quite right. Just casually hearing about the onset of the outages it seemed that they preceded the solar activity by a bit.
And it is possible that ATT in the southeast was uniquely affected; just a matter of bad luck.
About as smart as the "virus" that knows what day of the week it is.
Exactly.
It’s Caturday.
I agree in the northern or southern aspect. I just think it’s odd that it didn’t hit any other countries if it was really a solar flare. I ain’t buying it.
