The right of the people to keep and bear arms isn't just about our individual ability to act in self-defense or defense of others. As the Founders knew, the body of the people capable of bearing arms (otherwise known as the unorganized militia) is necessary to the security of a free state as well. Second Amendment attorneys Chuck Michel and Kostas Moros have done an excellent job of laying out the arguments of the Founding Generation in their recent law review article entitled Restrictions "Our Ancestors Would Never Have Accepted": The Historical Case Against Assault Weapon Bans, but the government of Finland has also given us a very important reminder that, even today, individual gun ownership serves as a check on tyranny and as a means of ensuring that a free people stay that way.
Finland plans to open more than 300 new shooting ranges to encourage more citizens to take up the hobby in the interest of national defence.
It is hoped that shooting in the Nordic country – which last year became Nato’s newest member and which shares a 830-mile (1,330km) border with Russia – could become as popular as football or ice hockey.
There are about 670 shooting ranges in Finland, down from about 2,000 at the turn of the century. By 2030, the government plans to increase the number to about 1,000.
Jukka Kopra, a National Coalition party MP and the chair of Finland’s defence committee, told the Guardian: “The present government aims to increase the amount of shooting ranges in Finland from roughly 600-700 up to 1,000. This is because of our defence model, which benefits from people having and developing their shooting skills on their own.”

The point being, Finland has some nice history here with Russia.
Hell yes. Any nation interested in self survival should have an armed citizenry. And a healthy appreciation for Christianity.
Does this mean they don’t allow illegal invaders into their territory?
This is a shocking concept for Western Europe.

Exactly. Schools are teaching children that guns are scary and should be only allowed in the hands of government and police officers. They discourage children from learning even the safety lessons of proper firearm use or handling. We are doing our children a big disservice to allow schools to encourage such violations of our Second Amendment rights.
The main thing though is that they are teaching children that they do not have a right that is specifically listed in the Constitution.
We should bring back firearms training (at the minimum, the NRA safety courses) into the schools.
The social import of the first clause of the 2A is widely underappreciated.
The Soviets thought they were fighting an entire battalion but it was just Simo. I believe he was the most effective sniper in history followed by Vasily Zaitsev from the battle of Stalingrad.

Firearms use, safety, and ethics should be taught about the same time we start teaching kids “stranger danger” and fire safety.
The “Left” in this Country are literally DOMESTIC ENEMIES and should be treated as such at every opportunity. There is no reasoning with those who have abandoned reason in pursuit of power.

There was a nice police procedural thriller series on a few years ago called ‘Bordertown’. About a police detectivecwho moves himself and family to a smaller town on the Russian border, seeking a quieter setting and more family time. He finds neither and his wife is also seriously ill and getting treatments.

Good article, but it’s most likely the Finns will have to use their guns against Europe’s ‘new arrivals’, as the Russians have more land and resources than they’ll ever need (and even more now, thanks to the Neocon War in Ukraine), so the LAST THING they want is to have to rule over a deadbeat bunch of Globohomo.
