The rate of syphilis among pregnant women in the U.S. has more than tripled in recent years, according to new research that helps shed light on an even greater surge of babies born with the potentially deadly infection.
The U.S. rate of maternal syphilis cases rose 221.6%, from 87.2 infections per 100,000 births in 2016 to 280.4 per 100,000 in 2022, according to a new report released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. According to the CDC, babies born with syphilis have increased an alarming 937% in the past decade.
If a baby gets syphilis, there’s a high likelihood of severe deformity, or even death.
How many of these women are immigrants?
Would that skew the data?
I still remember when our county had NO VD at all. That was about 1960. Within 15 years everyone I knew who had picked up an Oklahoma state line and county line bar skank came down with VD.
Maternal syphilis rates increased across all racial and ethnic groups each year from 2016 to 2022. The largest increase, at 783%, occurred among American Indian and Alaska Native mothers. They also had the highest infection rate of 1,410.5 cases per 100,000 births in 2022.
The maternal syphilis rate among white non-Hispanic mothers rose 315% from 2016 to 2022, while Hispanic mothers experienced an increase of 243%. The rate among Black mothers increased by 149% during the same time frame, compared with a 92% increase among Asian mothers. Asian mothers had the lowest maternal syphilis rate of any racial or ethnic group in 2022, at 73.3 per 100,000.

It’s not surprising rates are up but that “largest increase”
is not a representative set of the population to use for such a study unless you are studying that those groups specifically. They mainly interact within their locality and tribe, not the general population. A high school student should know better.
In the USAF our unit was tasked with investigating the airmen that were diagnosed at the hospital with VD...most cases were blacks or women that slept with black men. Some were women that slept with black men then white men. The benefits of having that job was knowing which women to avoid at the clubs.
What are the demographics? I wonder...nah.

We know what the demographics are. This will not be reported, even though it is the crux of the story.
The increase rates are meaningless without knowing the baseline rates.
They got VD from riding a tractor in their bathing suits.
Stationed TDY on Okinawa at Koza City. The AFRTS radio had a broadcast of “Here are your numbers for today. 18 72 39 65.” All the prostitutes in town had a number and you listened to see if the number came up positive for VD.
Once a typhon came through Guam and all the aircraft and ground crews were sent to Okinawa. When past they returned to Guam.
Two weeks later I was sent TDY to Guam. When I went to turn in my medical records, I walked past a long line of sad faced airmen getting their VD shots.
Same in Thailand.
What would be more interesting to me is the distribution of WHERE it came from and who might have ‘brought’ it into this country.
