Pipelines can do this for lots of reasons.

Low tier midstream gas companies like DCP have crap infrastructure assembled from hundreds of little gatherers with questionable quality.

They get always with it bc they are in very rural areas and owned by hedge funds in NYC that don’t give a damn about fly over lives.

This is a poly line. It’s not exactly nordstream.

Happens all day long in the oilfield.

Probably just broke or had a static issue.

Gas flowing down a line creates static like rubbing a wool carpet.

Having broken grounding (for whatever reason) can give you the spark.

Gas has no smell. That’s actually added at the plant.

Midstream companies fight corrosion constantly.
Many gathering systems are over 25 years old and repaired on a patchwork basis.
They usually stay ahead of major losses but everyone knows that each sunrise brings their system closer to it

My guess is Jose left a valve open.

This is a minor gathering line.

Yup.

Fuel, oxidizer, source of ignition.

Basics.

As to the cause, I'd wait for evidence for criminal or terrorist acts before making any such claims.

Wow, that is a refreshing approach for FR now.

Most likely internal corrosion or external corrosion most likely. Pigging the pipeline would catch internal corrosion but external is hard to catch since it is under ground.

linMcHlp: "Russia wanted to reduce German steel output.
As a way to convince Germany to lean away from supplying Ukraine, and appreciate the importance of:..."

Nobody yet knows who, exactly, blew up Russia's gas pipelines to Germany, or who authorized it, or paid for it or might have known and did nothing to stop it.

The most obvious finger points at Pres. Biden who had announced long in advance that war would end those pipelines.

Then there was a random Ukrainian who claimed to have done the deed without telling his government about it.

And the most unlikely perp is still Vlad the Invader, though at this point it's hard to put anything beyond him.

Europeans have replaced Russian gas & oil with other suppliers, albeit at higher prices, notably North American LNG shipments.

I've seen some pretty dire predictions about Germany's economic future, though all so far still a bit premature.

BINGO!!!!!! Either the invaders or homegrown terrorists are causing this disruption to put a stake in the heart of Americans! Let’s see beef farms have been attacked. Chicken farms have been engulfed in flames and now our oil. And what is the FBI,DOJ and CIA doing? Hunting down little grandmothers, who speak up at school meetings, or prolife protesters quietly praying in front of death baby killing factories on the sidewalk arrested and sentenced to 11 years in prison….while criminals and terrorist run amok! We are so incredibly effed!

If you hit it and you get wet, it’s water.
If you hit it and you get wet and it smells like a fart, it’s sewer.
If you hit it and it smells like a fart and explodes, it’s gas.
If you hit it and it buzzes and arcs, it’s electric.
If you hit it and nothing happened, it’s communications.

I worked with a guy in Arkansas at a Water System doing Distribution repairs. He would always be on the Backhoe and he didn't care if the repair area was Located or not. He'd just start digging and he would always rip something out. If it was comms he would just say "someone else will call it in." Then he'd go right back to digging.

Gas lines were always on the "big fun list." He would rip a gas line apart, shut off the Backhoe and reach into his shirt pocket and pull out a cigarette and light it up and then say "Well I guess We should call the Gas Guys." Everyone had already backed off several hundred feet as He shut the Backhoe off:

Now Germany is getting broke which makes it more and more weak. A position which Germans, are very not-used to feeling: They are after all good at what do. :)Now the US who Promised to make up for the Nat. Gas that was cut off when the pipeline, have cut off supplies.I expect the Germans are not happy campers at this point, but it mean they not long have the spare capacity to make weapons on a mass scale. This will be fun.

Years ago there was a gas line explosion in Oklahoma. It was mentioned that the gas lines use a thick walled pipe in highly populated areas but a thinner walled pipe in rural areas. The panhandle is a very rural area except in Guymon and Boise City. Still not many in Boise city.

The state I live in has a law making you or the company you work for responsible for the damages if you don’t call for a locate and hit something.

“2,900 skilled Welders”

That is what I try to inform people about - what it takes to have a lot of people who are skilled, helping them to maintain their skill, and arranging for them to be in the places where they are needed.

Something that Joe Biden et al eco-nuts, take for granted.

Along with all the planning and arranging for funding and production approvals, contracts, deals.

A snap of Joe Biden’s fingers can close the border, but cannot suddenly arrange for natural gas to flow at prices that do not drive up the cost of living.

Totally irrelevant bit of trivia: Oklahoma has a panhandle because of the Missouri Compromise, which banned slavery north of 36 degrees 30 minutes (except in the state of Missouri), west of the Mississippi River. Texas was a slave state so the northern border of the Texas Panhandle was 36 degrees 30 minutes. The strip of land north of that up to 37 degrees was eventually attached to Oklahoma.

The Texas border was set as a result of the Compromise of 1850. Four years later the Missouri Compromise line was thrown out as part of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
