A bird flu outbreak is ravaging California’s massive poultry industry, forcing businesses to kill more than one million chickens and causing egg prices to soar.
Mike Weber, who owns Sunrise Farms in Sonoma County, learned last month that his chickens had become infected with the highly-contagious virus. Per government rules, he had to slaughter his entire flock of 550,000 egg-laying hens.
“It’s a trauma. We’re all going through grief as a result of it,” Weber told the Associated Press inside an empty hen house. “Petaluma is known as the Egg Basket of the World. It’s devastating to see that egg basket go up in flames.”
More than a million chickens have been euthanized in California due to the bird flu outbreak.

HPAI, or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. It kills chickens very rapidly.
These viruses arise when migratory birds go north in the summer and mingle with migratory birds from Asia. They pass viruses to each other. A bird can catch two different strains of influenza virus at the same time. When this happens, the viruses “reassort,” or exchange pieces of their genome. Since their genome consists of eight separate strands of RNA, hundreds of all-new influenza viruses can be created in that way. The pathogenic properties of each new virus cannot be predicted. Some might be more pathogenic, some less. Obviously, in this case, an extremely pathogenic virus was formed.
These viruses are bird-adapted. If they should mix with a mammal-adapted virus, there is a possibility that one of the new viruses would be the next fun pandemic virus. This type of mixing occurs in pigs, which can be easily infected by both mammalian and avian influenza viruses. This is one reason why bird flu outbreaks are always watched so carefully. The other reason is the economic cost to the poultry industry. Millions upon millions of chickens have been culled to stop outbreaks.

They don’t vaccinate the chickens because of the fact that vaccination is not a shield against disease, but an immune system training aid.
If a chicken has a weak immune response following vaccination, it might still be strong enough for the chicken to survive catching HPAI. If a chicken has HPAI which is (mostly) controlled by the immune system, it can still shed virus. That virus can get into wild bird populations because there is no way to keep outdoor poultry and wild birds away from each other. The wild birds then go and infect other poultry flocks. They can also infect pigs, which act as mixing bowls for the creation of new viruses. So the preferred method of controlling HPAI (or even LPAI) outbreaks is to cull the affected birds.
The scientific community is well-aware of the fact that vaccines are not shields against disease and that individual immune response to vaccines is variable. But we don’t cull humans. We use other methods to isolate the infected. Try telling a chicken to self-isolate for several days...
No one stops you or anyone else from buying from some hippie free range small poultry producer.
That’s generally what rich liberals do already.
