AUSTIN — Three migrants, including two children, drowned in Eagle Pass on Friday night after Texas troopers and National Guard members would not “grant access” to the individuals while “in distress,” according to U.S. Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Laredo.
The news of the drownings comes while the state is in a standoff with the federal government after Texas authorities took control of Shelby Park, a municipal park in Eagle Pass on the Texas-Mexico border, on Wednesday night — against the wishes of the city’s mayor and President Joe Biden’s administration.
A group of six migrants “were in distress” as they attempted to cross the Rio Grande at about 9 p.m. Friday, Cuellar said in a statement on X.

Even if true, the proper statement should be:
The Mexico-United States border is naturally dangerous. There is a river and a desert where people can die. This is why we have controlled border crossings where people can safely enter the United States.-PJThe Democrats are pursuing the wrong policy of trying to make the illegal entry points as safe as possible for people to cross. They should instead focus on diverting those people to the proper and safe points of entry for themselves and their families.
Texas is installing barriers around these dangerous places to encourage people to travel to the proper border crossings where they can safely and legally present their documents and claims for entry into the United States.
