How does that make sense?
They could be sued. Better to fire the good guys.
Aka “how to lose all your real customers in on fell swoop.”
This is common practice with all retailers. The employee getting hurt has a much more costly consequence than letting a guy swipe a firearm.
TribalPrincess2U has got it right. It’s all about the lawsuits. The store owner has evidently decided it’s better to lose a $500 pistol instead of being sued by an injured thief for $5,000,000.
Of course such thinking only encourages future thefts.
Don’t know if all Academy’s are laid out the same, but at our local store, the firearms are toward the back of the store and the thief would have to navigate a virtual maze before getting to the front door.
I can see employees getting disciplined for trying to apprehend a thief over a stolen jacket, but a firearm? They were protecting the community as well as their store. Ammo is on shelves next to the firearms counter, so he could have been leaving the store with a gun and ammo. I’m sure any victims would sue Academy for lax firearms security.
Firing them is nuts.
But, it’s a sporting goods store! Isn’t it firearm thief season right now?
The left only hates guns when the color of the thief is not appropriate.
There’s a gun shop that needs an “Out. of Business” sign in its window.
Uncle Leo?
Swarm! Swarm!
I spent thousands of dollars at Academy on guns and ammo. Signed up on their website and almost immediately got a “Happy Pride Month” email. Never went back and never will. I hope the homosexuals make up for the money they lost with that stupid pandering.
In the eighties, I tried my hand in the retail world at a sporting goods company and learned how cut throat/back stabbing the retail world was.
Company SOP was to Not confront shop lifters, Not to notify other mgrs and let them do what they want and let them leave unopposed.
One day we had three corp VP’s touring the store. While the VP’s were on site, a gang of professional shop lifters came in and walked out with 4 sets of high end golf clubs.
The company liquidated soon after when three employees were killed at the Plano (Texas y’all) store.
That company was Herman’s Sporting Goods.
A former coworker who worked with me for several years had the same thing happen to him. He was an ordained minister who worked for Lowe’s as an outside sales consultant who went into customer homes and quoted roofing, siding, windows, etc.
He was an annual million dollar producer. Until one day he was walking into a Lowe’s when he saw some employees confronting a shoplifter. As the thief bolted, my coworker strategically placed an elbow into the thief’s face as the thief was running past him knocking him down and out.
Before the criminal woke up and the police were there, Lowe’s management had fired and escorted off the premises their million dollar man. This country sorely needs torte reform.
This needs to be banned. Corporate cowardice and self-interest has consequences for the rest of us.
