Why should an employee be discipline for their attempt to stop a shoplifter? Stealing is wrong no matter what is being taken, the person who is doing the “Right” course of action should never be punishes, the criminal should. There are too many corporations who are too quick to punish their employees than go after the thief.

I’m not saying they should. But I do understand the idea that trying to stop a thief from stealing a jacket might well make the company’s lawyers become a bit twitchy. But letting a thief go with a firearm is to my mind a completely different matter. Someone brazen enough to steal a firearm might well have plans for using it in an illegal and dangerous to others manner.

The store and its employees have a duty to stop the thief. At the very least (and I don’t know if this happened or not) a phone call to law enforcement with a detailed description of the their should have been made before he ever got to the front door.

My last firearm purchase was at Academy. As I recall, an employee from the firearms section escorted me to the front of the store where I paid for it and then saw me out the door.

>>How does that make sense?

In the eighties, I tried my hand in the retail world at a sporting goods company and learned how cut throat/back stabbing the retail world was.

Company SOP was to Not confront shop lifters, Not to notify other mgrs and let them do what they want and let them leave unopposed.

One day we had three corp VP’s touring the store. While the VP’s were on site, a gang of professional shop lifters came in and walked out with 4 sets of high end golf clubs.

The company liquidated soon after when three employees were killed at the Plano (Texas y’all) store.

That company was Herman’s Sporting Goods.

Can the fired employee sue for $5 million?

Hopefully you told them why you were ceasing to be a customer!

A former coworker who worked with me for several years had the same thing happen to him. He was an ordained minister who worked for Lowe’s as an outside sales consultant who went into customer homes and quoted roofing, siding, windows, etc.

He was an annual million dollar producer. Until one day he was walking into a Lowe’s when he saw some employees confronting a shoplifter. As the thief bolted, my coworker strategically placed an elbow into the thief’s face as the thief was running past him knocking him down and out.

Before the criminal woke up and the police were there, Lowe’s management had fired and escorted off the premises their million dollar man. This country sorely needs torte reform.

“At the very least (and I don’t know if this happened or not) a phone call to law enforcement”

Unfortunately, too blue cities / states don’t hold these people accountable for their thievery. They are incentivized to continue with their stealing as soon as they are released if they are arrested. Our country is falling apart with this lawlessness and not adhering to the “Rule of Law”.

This needs to be banned. Corporate cowardice and self-interest has consequences for the rest of us.

So many corporations are destroying their companies with their “woke” policies. Reading stories such as yours and the one in the linked article, makes me think twice about shopping at big box stores. I’m sure I’m not the only one. For instance, just a few decades ago it was fun to go Christmas shopping just for the decorations, ambiance, and cheerful attitude of everyone else. Even if you didn’t plan on purchasing anything specific, impulse buys were almost guaranteed.

Of course, those days are long gone. First came the Black Friday frenzies, then the war on Christmas music and decorations and even the words “Merry Christmas”. Now there is a real threat of being injured or killed by someone who feels they have been “dissed” or who thinks they are entitled to any product they want at no cost. And, if you successfully defend yourself or others you are likely to end up in jail.

Just think of the money lost to those companies from those shoppers due to the wokeness and DIE policies.

Are we related? Separated at birth, perhaps?

“Hopefully you told them why you were ceasing to be a customer!”

Actually I did. Of course I never received a response.
