The Department of Transportation announced more than $6 billion in grant funding for high-speed rail projects this week. The money comes amid ongoing support for a technology that has also encountered concerns about its costs.
Brightline West, an affiliate of Florida’s Brightline intercity rail service, was awarded $3 billion in federal funds for its proposed line between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, which would zoom passengers between the cities in two hours.
The California High-Speed-Rail Authority was awarded $3.1 billion to continue work on its system, which will ultimately connect Los Angeles and San Francisco in less than three hours.
The grant money announced this week will primarily fund construction of that system in the Central Valley, according to a press release from the California High-Speed Rail Authority.
That portion of the project will connect Merced, Fresno and Bakersfield sometime between 2030-33. Once that’s complete, the project will extend into the Bay Area and eventually Los Angeles.

Looks like a big payoff for Commiefornia!
More like 85% will get stolen.
...don't forget the unions. Got to keep greasing the wheels of our nation's best money laundering system..
The few will profit wildly. The many will get screwed over. Again.
Everyone in both houses will be getting kickbacks.
I still think they should figure out a cost-effective rail system to install between the lanes of interstate highways. Then, there’s no cost of private property purchase, no eminent domain lawsuits, and they got direct routes between major cities. But, I guess that’s too simple.
Where is Willie Brown?
This stuff is lunacy. Just acquiring the rights of way for transit and parking will dwarf that amount. I don’t get these nuts pining for the 1800s again.
That’s an awful lot of electric wire to lay to power these beasts. Probably $6 Billion in wire alone.
EC
10% for The Big Guy, 5% for Gavin, and 5% for the DNC.
**********
Plus 70% for agency administrative overhead and compliance studies.
Is this like joe getting funding for EV chargers 3 years ago and not 1 has been done yet?
Callie and its HSR is like Boston's Big Dig, but no rails (or very little). IMO, Callie is using the money to fund its other budget shortfall programs through which it wants to control people.
Whatever their initial cost projections, they will be double or triple that. Preliminary cost projections are always intended to get the camel’s nose under the tent (and the body will soon follow).
"Complete" -- ha, ha, ha. By the time it's complete in 50 years, all the concrete pedestals will have to be replaced due to corroded rebar, spalling and crumbling concrete. For another $25 billion.
It's a Perpetual Union Machine.
Is this juicy payoff meant to get Newsom out of the race?
This figure isn’t correct. From our glorious leader’s mouth:
“Over a billion three hundred million trillion three hundred million dollars!”

The wire will be stolen long before it is energized for the first time.
THIS BOONDOGGLE goes back to Dirty Harry Reid.
FIRST OFF——as I understand, those leaving from Calif have to PARK near Victorville-—IN UNSECURED AREAS-—STOLEN CARS -—HERE WE COME.
Victorville is already quite a drive from Santa Monica or the San Fernando Valley.
THEN-—after riding the fancy train—at GOD only knows what cost-—you are then in Las Vegas-—without transportation. You have to pay for cabs to go anywhere. MORE out of your control costs.
Then, you get to reverse your trip-—get to Victorville—and still drive back to your home-—IF YOUR VEHICLE was NOT vandalized in the parking lot at Victorville.
I used to live in So Calif. Drove to LV many times from west end of SF Valley. 273 miles one way. MAXIMUM 4 hours, even with food/bathroom stop at Barstow.
I bet this is a complete flop.....
The San Joaquin Valley high speed rail is already WAAAAAY over budget & EVEN more over time.
AND Reid had already bought up land that would be impacted by this “HIGH SPEED RAIL”.
Wire is very expensive. Home Depot keeps it locked in a cage now.
“The California High-Speed-Rail Authority was awarded $3.1 billion to continue work on its system, which will ultimately connect Los Angeles and San Francisco in less than three hours.”
Tossing more money again at California’s failed high speed rail - from nowhere to nowhere:
“Despite 15 years of work and about $5bn spent, the 2008 promise of quick transport between Los Angeles and San Francisco has not materialized.”
