An explosion at a university gymnasium in the southern Philippines has killed three people and wounded nine others, according to local authorities.
The blast ripped through a Catholic mass service on Sunday at Mindanao State University in Marawi City...
Police said they were investigating the explosion, including the possibility that it was carried out by pro-Islamic State militants...

Philippes has a lot of Muslims. They are in the southern islands.Actually, they are in every island, but they proliferate in western Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago. Stay away from those areas.

Northern Mindanao is not a bad place, IMHO, other than the NPA. I was always told, not to go west of Cagayan De Oro City, because of the Muslims.

My in-laws live in NW Mindanao, in Butuan City.
So far, over the past 10 years I have not discerned a reason to fear anything other than an idiot drunk being mugged at night.

I spent a few weeks in Butuan City, though I am in Davao City now. I thought Butuan City was pretty safe. The people I knew, lived almost directly under the Magsaysay Bridge.
