WASHINGTON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - A U.S. auto safety regulator said on Friday it is opening an investigation into 73,000 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid cars over reports of abrupt loss of power, failures to restart and other issues.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was opening the preliminary evaluation into the 2016 through 2019 model year Chevrolet Volt after 61 complaints tied to the battery energy control module (BECM). Some complaints reported there was little to no warning before the loss of operating power or reduced power mode occurred.
General Motors (GM.N) previously issued a technical service bulletin saying if vehicles fail to restart, the BECM may need to be replaced and reprogrammed but has not recalled vehicles, NHTSA said. GM ended production of the Volt in early 2019.
GM said it was cooperating with the NHTSA investigation and said it believes it has "taken appropriate action to remedy customer concerns related to the battery energy control module but will continue to support the agency’s review of the matter."
NHTSA said the issue may pose a safety risk if vehicles cannot move with the flow of surrounding traffic and is more serious depending on a stalled vehicle’s ability to restart.
Some owners have told NHTSA they have waited months or been unable to get replacement battery modules after experiencing the issue. GM said it has a sufficient replacement parts in its supply pipeline.
An owner in Los Angeles said the Volt "suddenly, and unexpectedly lost propulsion while driving. The vehicle is no longer able to turn on or drive."
Another owner reported the Volt would not drive more than over 35 miles per hour on the highway "and it stops driving on electricity randomly."

heh heh heh . . . .
What? No gas?
I’m sure battery humpers don’t mind at all
According to an article I read GM never intended to manufacture the Volt. The government made it a requirement as part of the bailout. Chevy knew there was a potential fire problem and that other parts of the design were not ready for mass introduction. But you want the money? They closed down a successful vehicle line to manufacture the Volt.
I can’t tell you how many times, including on the Volt, that some liberal said if only companies would make X, people would buy it. The first time was a government woman speaking for the then presidential administration who said that people didn’t buy small, fuel-efficient cars because no one made them. The commentator showing the video rattled off a list of small, fuel-efficient cars that had been available at the time but had been cancelled due to low sales. People want speed, power and above all sex appeal. People will almost always choose the car they think makes them look attractive.
Electric cars aren’t inherently bad but Buggy Operating Systems and Heavy Shitty LiOn batteries.
Buggy Operating systems are not limited to EV’s though. All cars have software bugs now, but some are worse than others.
Every single thing is connected to some kind of relay which is directly processed by an array computers. EV’s just take it to another level.
ITS OUT OF GAS!!!
Driving down the street through the courtesy of Fred’s two feet is a safer option compared to unreliable EV’s.
Everyone should follow Eric Peters
He combines conservatism, anti-central-planning, and anti-bloated-government into discussions about automobiles.
And there is A LOT to talk about. US Government mandates and political meddling have destroyed the “free market” for automobiles. Americans are paying a lot more, for worse automobiles, fewer options, and less freedom

Do the brakes still work?
Batteries are Weird.
My dang 2019 F250 went Flat and I almost spent the Night in the Freezing Desert !

Wal-Mart Premium Sparks that Truck Now !
Look on the bright side. It keeps them from catching fire.
Chevrolet...like a rock.
Rocks don't move, neither.
A module failed ...imagine that? When you intentionally make a mechanical device no longer mechanical and rely strictly on electronics as opposed to vacuum of heat induced you end up with the vehicles we have NEW nowadays....something that bricks and their is nothing you can do to edge it home or off the way to get service. When they started to put computers in cars I was against it . As time goes by points/condensor’s and generators (as opposed to alternators)look pretty good.
KISS rule is long forgotten obviously.

🤣😆😂😜
Winner 🏆🏆🏆
I just saw one last night - hood up guy sitting in it for some period of time
I don’t know if it was a Volt
Chevy messed up here. Instead of marketing the Volt as a car that occasionally loses power, they should market it as a camper that occasionally gains power.
See, Chevy? Sometimes you gotta think outside the box.
