Heat pumps are ok in the southern latitudes. If you can supplement it on really cold days with a wood stove of some size, it's a good choice. You just have to understand it runs almost all the time, and the heated air will only be about two degrees higher in temp than ambient air.
I use a heat pump for my gunnite pool. The heat pump heats very efficiently for that application.

Newer cold-climate units work down to - 22 F. Fine for occasional dips. Extended ops at those Temps should have a geothermal exchange.
