Trump iS a new yorker. I seriously doubt he knows the difference between automatic and semi-automatic fire beyond his advisors and what he’s seen in movies. Yes he is. It just won't work as an excuse I suppose.
And please note that as far as I have found, President Trump has never walked back or expressed regret for getting the ball rolling on banning bump stocks.
He is suspect on 2nd Amendment issues.
