NCAA Investigation Into Michigan Football Program Has Highlighted Recklessness Of Media

Two things have become apparent since the NCAA investigation into the Michigan football program became public knowledge nearly two weeks ago. The first is that Connor Stalions, a low-level staff member within the football program, pushed the boundaries of scouting future opponents and likely broke NCAA regulations in the process. The second is that, in a rush to capitalize on the gold mine that has become this ongoing saga in Ann Arbor, members of both the local and national media have exposed themselves as a group who place a higher value on analytics than they do on accuracy.

The steady flood of reporting about the investigation into the Michigan football program hasn't produced much in the way of facts, but it has certainly produced plenty in the way of rumors, speculation, and flat out inaccurate information - as well as producing a lot of clicks along the way.

Here are just a handful of things that have been "reported" over the last week:

In addition to the whirlwind of speculative and inaccurate reporting, several prominent members of the national media have spent the last week calling for the Big Ten conference and the NCAA to hand out some form of punishment to the Michigan football program - and to do so before the investigation is even complete. To be clear, none of those national media members have seen any evidence regarding what took place and who was involved, yet that hasn't prevented them from calling for action.

ESPN needs payback for the drama they have created in sports over the years.

If I were in a position of power I would single them out somehow for sanction but I am not the POTUS or anything like that.

I disagree. Sounds like the SI writer is fussing about other sports media doing it. IMHO their venom is two-fold: 1) Michigan is one of the big dogs right now and it's always fun to take down Goliath. And 2) Michigan coach Harbaugh made the cardinal media sin of being a pro-life advocate. For that heresy the media inquisition is looking for kindling.

Maybe, but the truth is that Harbaugh is a weirdo. Watch some of the press conferences he does. He's just an oddball....

I suspect the knowledge of the Sign Stealing goes higher up in the Michigan University Management than they want to admit.

If Sign Stealing is against the NAACF Rules then remove Michigan for the rest of the Season!

I am an Ohio State alum and football fan. OSU internet sports forums are ablaze with calls to burn Harbaugh and his program at the stake. Yet with out due process and dillegence, the media is just whoring for clicks and revenue.

When it comes to acting off the beaten path, Harbaugh ain't nuthin' compared to the SEC's Lane Kiffin (Ole Miss) and LSU's former coach Les Miles. Last but not least was the SEC coach decades ago that got it all started and that was Coach Visor (Spurrier) of the Florida Gators (later South Carolina). LOL

Since you’re an OSU fan I want you to remember the name Harry Hoosier (sometimes spelled Hosier or Hoozer) the next time your team plays Indiana. It’s a good bet he’s the origin of the Indiana state nickname, particularly with as much time as he preached in what used to be called the “Middle Colonies”.

They didn’t give it to Penn State.

Look dude (dudette?), back in the day Harbaugh would have been called colorful, or a character. But since he doesn’t fit into your version of what a highly paid college head coach should look and act like, you call him a nutcase.
Whatever.
And any of what he does hurts you how?

He was the 49’er coach. He was a nutcase then. Still is. Never said he hurt me. I’ve always been highly entertained by him, even when he was at Stanford. He just has weird ways of communicating and relating to others

I am an OSU fan from birth but have lived in Ann Arbor for 30 years. (Four family members have UM degrees.) I have followed media reports around this quite closely. There is almost no solid evidence for or against the allegations raised. It is impressive how folks are jumping to conclusions, and yes, the media is stoking it all. ESPN is especially risible.

Based on what I am hearing around town, all smoke teeny tiny fire. I do not know but would wager that Harbaugh’s extension goes through some time before the Buckeyes beat his team later this month on the gridiron. :)

It is no secret that Kiffin wants the Bama job when Saban retires, but many fans think he is too weird to be the head coach. They feel the same way about Prime Time. I say if they win and keep the program out of trouble, then some flash and quirkiness is acceptable.

Speculation is TCU knew about it, and that’s why they made Michigan look so silly.
