The U.S. has stopped issuing export licenses for most civilian firearms and ammunition for 90 days for all non-governmental users, the Commerce Department said on Friday, citing national security and foreign policy interests.
The Commerce Department did not provide further details for the pause, which also includes shotguns and optical sights, but said an urgent review will assess the "risk of firearms being diverted to entities or activities that promote regional instability, violate human rights, or fuel criminal activities."
The Commerce Department declined to comment beyond the posting on its website.
The halt covers most of the guns and ammunition that could be purchased in a U.S. gun store, said Johanna Reeves, a lawyer who specializes in export controls and firearms with the law firm Reeves & Dola in Washington.
Reeves said she had not seen the Commerce Department take such a sweeping action like this before. "For sure they have individual country policies – but nothing like this," she said.
Export licences for Ukraine and Israel, as well as some other close allies, will be exempted from the temporary halt in exports.
U.S. companies that sell firearms, including Sturm Ruger & Co. (RGR.N), Smith & Wesson Brands (SWBI.O) and Vista Outdoor (VSTO.N), could be impacted by the export ban.
Overseas customers include distributors and stores that sell firearms.
Exporters can continue to submit license requests during the pause, but they will be "held without action" until the pause is lifted.

If you don’t have a self-defense tool ...time is running out. It looks like the government is running out of them to sell to Ukraine/Israel.
When they run out, will they come for ours? I think that will be some time from now, but then what was one of the first things Ukraine and Israel did when announcing war? Gave their civilians guns?
This makes no sense. They say they are doing it to promote stability yet the two places they will allow shipments are currently at war.
What the hell are they up to?
Hard to say, this has never been done before. It could be a supply chain problem?
Did the burn through the whole stockpile in Ukraine? That’s a lot of guns and ammo.
Not enough for ourselves? For our own troops now that they have been drawn into the conflict?
I thought that too... I wonder what’s really going on here? A world wide uprising? Economic collapse? Spreading wars? Muslim days of rage?
Supply chain issues tend to be fairly narrow. Like primers or powder for ammunition.
This covers both firearms and ammunition. Civilian firearms? Is this a ploy to damage U.S. gun manufacturers?
Our troops don’t use civilian firearms.
Probably because Biden doesn’t want Israeli civilians to have firearms to defend themselves.
Ping & BKMRK.
Cornering the market for the Bidenistas.
No, I don’t think so. As word of this gets out I would suspect more people will move to purchase a firearm.
Wasn’t their an ammo manufacture that the government just bought/contracted all from? Seem to recall something about it from a few weeks ago. Seems to be scrubbed from the internet now.
It might be south of the border Cartel concerns.
It's part of the Marxist agenda.
An export halt is pretty strange.
There’s quite a bit of primers and other components out there, and quite a bit of ammo too..
There have been some spot shortages I’ve seen reported of some calibers in some areas of the country, but otherwise generally everythings seems available, though at continued high prices...
And as far as guns... ar parts and rifles are pretty plentiful, as well as handguns.
It’s also interesting that there is no comments about an inport hold. The U.S. imports lots of ammo and rifles from around the world....
From these observations, it’s likely that the commerce department is doing this, to suppress firearms and ammo manufacturing the the U.S.
Decreases in exports and sales, will force manufactures to decrease production, leading to future decreased supplies...
Just the thing, if the government were setting the stage to try to crack down on firearms possession and ownership in the U.S.... regardless of the constitution and recent rulings on the 2A.
EXACTLY. Private sector exporters sending ARs to Israeli citizens. And I'm sure IMI can make (has made) all the ammo they'd need.
Many of our troops carry the M17 pistol which is more or less the same thing as a Sig P320 which is in fact available for civilian purchase.
It’s linked one way or another to the Useless Nations Agenda 2030💩.
All about the nwo/1 world goobermint Disarmament Agenda.
Heels was spewing the confiscation $}{!T yesterday or the day before.
They know that they must Disarm the public before they can get away with the big plan.
