Kennedy cuts deal with Schumer on veterans’ gun rights amendment

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said Thursday he negotiated a deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on an amendment allowing military veterans whose finances go into conservatorship to keep their firearms, a proposal Schumer previously called a “poison pill” to the Senate’s minibus appropriations bill.

Kennedy’s effort to get a vote on his amendment had held up the bill funding military construction and the departments of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development.

Now, the Louisiana senator said he expects to get a vote on his proposal after he agreed to modify the language. As a result, Kennedy said he will let the long-delayed appropriations bill advance.

My animosity towards Kennedy is that this is enshrined in the 2nd amendment. This isn't a “win”; a win would be Schumer recognizing that violating the 2a right of a veteran because of a medical condition is undeniably wrong. We have to stop being thankful when politicians let us keep what THEIR mandate says is ours to keep. They should shake in their boots at the thought of violating that mandate.

You wouldn’t be very good at it.

Maybe I’d be better than you think. Maybe it’s not me, maybe it’s the way things are being done that’s wrong. Remember, there was a time a duel would have been in order.

The original attempt at characterizing veterans' financial conservatorships as the equivalent of adjudications of mental incompetence was a nasty trick by Obama. It sounds as though Kennedy figured out a way to get the U.S. Code to read otherwise, which is why Schumer sees it as a "poison pill".

I can't see a downside to closing off that particular route to the backstabbing politicos, even if it is technically redundant to the language of the Second Amendment.

“In politics, sometimes you have to win a little to win more later.

As compared to the Republicans in DC ?

Where they lose some now, and lose even more later.
