Hamas was 'laying a trap' for Israel by attacking, and is goading it to invade Gaza: Ex-MI6 chief

A former UK intel chief said Hamas "laid a trap" for Israel.

He said the militant group was provoking Israel to invade Gaza.

An invasion, he warned, would cost many lives and drive radicalization.

Attacks by the Hamas militant group were likely a ploy to lure Israel into a costly ground invasion of Gaza, the former head of Britain's MI6 spy agency said.

Alex Younger, who served as the head of the UK's foreign intelligence service from 2014 to 2020, gave his comments in an interview on the BBC's "The Today Podcast."

It came after Hamas fighters stormed into Israel and massacred whole villages — Israel has said more than 1,000 people were killed, including children and the elderly.

He said: "I absolutely understand and endorse Israel's right to defend themselves in the circumstances, and indeed to restore the credibility of those defenses, so that that sense of psychological safety can be restored to the people."

"But here's the thing, you shouldn't do what your enemy wants you to do," said Younger.

He assumes Israel will half ass it again.

I don't believe that's true.

~~~
Also, the premise he seems to be laying out is that Israel would be better off just cordoning them off and pretending the launched rockets and terrorist skirmishes are just minor troll actions to get them to overreact. In other words, Israel, just sit there and take your licks. heh
He assumes Hamas terrorists are smart and think ahead of their blood lust for killing innocent non-muslims.
...I wouldn’t make such an assumption. They’re rabid animal savages.
Actually sieges were some of US Grants greatest military achievements. I say starve them out until they yield the hostages. Most palis love Hamas!
Yes they pulled off this invasion.
Underestimating your enemy is *ALWAYS* stupid, often a capital offense.
Who would have thought that some 10th century camel-humping dirtbags would come up with the idea of flying jetliners into buildings?
It does not matter if it is a trap or they half ass it. I assume ISR need to do this. They have to show they have the balls to do this war.
Sounds like the UK's former intel chiefs are about as idiotic as our own former intel chiefs.
I mean he’s not wrong, imo. Hamas wants ‘the big one’ to kick off. Gaza and Hamas themselves are viewed as a useful means to an end. Victory is the destruction of Israel.
Give it another couple weeks of non-stop airstrikes to soften them up, flood the tunnels with CO or CO2 gas, then roll the tanks
former UK intel chief
Maybe this why he's out.
He also could be related to Chamberlain.
MI6? Is MI6 as honest and reliable as, oh say the CIA or the FBI? /s
This leads to the question; where was MI6 and Mossad in the weeks leading up to the sudden attack? We know the CIA & FBI were tied up looking for White Supremacy Groups, Political Dissidents and Parental Insurgency Groups in various school boards.
Yes, because radicalization apparently hasn't been an issue and won't be unless Israel invades. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight...
Anything Israel does...be it flattening Gaza, or hanging back and waiting for the rats to use up their stores...will be spun in the usual circles as a genocide perpetrated upon the Palis by the Jews. Other Muslims would be inclined to intervene; Iran could use it as a pretext to attack.
Oh yes it's a trap, and I think there are Iranian tactical nukes waiting in Gaza.
The sudden support of Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia along with Jordan jumping in the fray points to a huge ambush.
Hamas had to know Israel would carpet bomb Gaza before going in, so my bet is there are nuke buried in the rubble..
