Three-judge federal court picks Alabama congressional map

A three-judge federal court has picked the map Alabama will use for its congressional elections next year, one that will add a second district where Black residents make up close to half of the voting age population.

The judges picked Remedial Plan 3, one of the three maps drawn by a special master appointed by the court to fix what the court found was a likely violation of the Voting Rights Act.

The main changes are in the southern half of the state, where District 2 becomes the second district where Black voters will have an opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice. Alabama’s racially polarized voting means that would most likely be a Democrat.

District 1 changes substantially, with two Republican incumbents within its borders, Reps. Jerry Carl of Mobile and Barry Moore of Enterprise.

Instead of six safe Republican districts and one safe Democratic district, Alabama’s map will now have two districts where Democrats have a realistic chance to win.

Last year, the three-judge court found that Alabama’s map, with one majority Black district out of seven in a state where one-fourth of residents are Black, most likely violates the Voting Rights Act. The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that decision in June.

Funny how the Courts never re-draw the clown show in Dem states. For example the farce that is PA

This is based on the same racists logic of Affirmative Action.

Sounds like the other 4 White districts need new voting machines.

Have you noticed how these Feral RAT “judges” NEVER redistrict a RAT district. The GOP never gets a freebie district.

I mean, it literally was since MLK was personally involved in passage of the 1965 VRA which is the statute at issue here.

The strategy in Alabama and elsewhere is to increase the number of seats winnable by the Democrats. It only takes five seats flipping to the Democrats to make Hakeem Jeffries the Speaker of the House.

Article 1, Section 4 of the US Constitution states ;

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

It doesn’t mention judges.

Yeah but the VRA relies on Sec 5 of the 14th Amendment.

I am in District 2. Republican Barry Moore is my Representative. Looks like I’ll now be in District 6.

Divide up the voters by last name, say:

A-G District 1
H-N District 2
O-Z District 3

I would vote in District 1.

Basing districts on geography raises lots of tough questions and wastes the time of courts and legislatures.

“One for you. Two for me.” If it ever went the other way, all the nasty lawfare organizations would get it overturned in thirty seconds.
