OMAHA, Neb. — An explosion inside a shipping container at the world’s largest railyard prompted evacuations in western Nebraska Thursday because of the toxic smoke generated when one of the chemicals aboard caught fire.
Around noon, an explosion occurred inside an intermodal container on a railcar at Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard in North Platte, though it wasn’t clear what caused the explosion, railroad spokeswoman Robynn Tysver said.
No one was injured, and no cars derailed.
Authorities evacuated everyone within a four-mile radius of the railyard, which is about 280 mileswest of Omaha, was evacuated because of the smoke, and U.S. Highway 30 was closed between North Platte and Hershey.

IN 2001, I rode the Pony Express Trail with other riders on horseback. 50 miles a day-—5 days a week-—8 weeks-—2000 miles from St Joseph, MO to Virginia City, NV. Tues thru Sat. OFF Sunday & Monday to rest & replenish. Early June to July 26th or so.
We overnighted in Mitchell, Nebraska the 2nd weekend. The COAL TRAINS-—2-3 engines—120 cars long—came thru west to east every 30 minutes all 24 hours. We were at county fairgrounds & could hear the train horns going thru the small town-—Which is the soybean processing capital of the USA.
When we rode west on Tues Am, we saw a large switching yard-—9 or more sets of rails.
WAS A BUCKET LIST ITEM. 101 riders total participated in some fashion of another & 289 horses.
IMPOSSIBLE to ride across Nebraska/Wyoming/Utah/Nevada & NOT think about the pioneer wagon trains on the same trails.
Fort Laramie was particularly interesting.
All By Design, destroy farmland, prevent harvesting of crops, raise prices of food that can be harvested. Additionally, what’s coming down the pike where they need a disaster to hide it? I have never heard of so many ‘rail road accidents’ in my life. It’s all by design.
