Ron DeSantis snipes at New Mexico Governor’s gun restrictions

The Florida Governor isn't missing a chance to make a Second Amendment case.

New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment. Yet Florida’s Governor is notably disenchanted with the Southwestern state after its Democratic Governor took a stand against guns.

“Just a few months after ending the COVID ‘public health emergency,’ the Governor of New Mexico has declared a new ‘public health emergency’: Guns. She is now asserting the power to infringe on Second Amendment rights by executive fiat. This assertion is not surprising — since 2020, ‘public health’ has become a pretext for depriving citizens of civil liberties and trampling on our Constitutional rights,” Ron DeSantis tweeted Saturday.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Friday a new public health order targeting guns and drugs in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County in the wake of two mass shootings and three juveniles being shot to death in recent weeks, citing threats to people’s “very right to exist.”

“The time for standard measures has passed,” said Grisham. “And when New Mexicans are afraid to be in crowds, to take their kids to school, to leave a baseball game – when their very right to exist is threatened by the prospect of violence at every turn – something is very wrong.”

The Governor’s press release says her “action plan includes a suspension of open and concealed carry laws in Bernalillo County, temporarily prohibiting the carrying of guns on public property with certain exceptions. Exceptions include for licensed security guards and law enforcement officers. Citizens with permits to carry firearms are free to possess their weapons on private property (such as at a gun range or gun store), provided they transport the firearm in a locked box, use a trigger lock, or some other mechanism that renders the gun incapable of being fired.”

DeSantis has been criticized for Florida’s relaxed attitude toward gun ownership, particularly in light of permitless carry being legalized this year, even during his rare in-state press conferences.

This week in Jacksonville, someone who wasn’t a member of the media charged DeSantis with allowing “weapons to be put in the street,” brandished by “immature and hateful people.”

“You have allowed people to hunt people like me in broad daylight,” the questioner said before he was escorted out of the public event.

The Governor also took criticism for invoking the Second Amendment after Hurricane Idalia in a warning to potential post-storm criminals.

“I’ve seen signs in different people’s yards in the past after these disasters, and I would say it’s probably here, ‘You loot, we shoot.’ You never know what’s behind that door,” DeSantis said. “If you go break into somebody’s house and you’re trying to loot, these are people that are going to be able to defend themselves and their families, so I would not do it.”

DeSantis is outspoken, doesn't whither or whine under criticism. He's been steady and successful supporter of the second amendment. Good to see him call out the blatant unconstitutional action by the New Mexico governor.

If DeSantis only listened to the people that he’s now listening to - from the beginning, he’d be credible to those “listless” Trump voters.

“I don’t see Trump speaking out, do you?”

Doesn’t need to, his judges speak for themselves.

The bumpstock banner in chief is winning. If he did that, what else will he do.

Obama was the first to declare that the Bill of Rights are not absolute and that they can be restricted out of existence Now we see his handiwork in action.

“I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida … to go to court would have taken a long time. Take the guns first, go through due process second." - Trump

F--- Trump and anyone else who agrees with his stance on guns.

DeSantis is outspoken

No, desanctomonious is a loser. He's not able to win in a single state. His only goal is to damage Trump, the same goal as crispy cream. desanctomonious is part of the uniparty and fully supports what the deep state is doing to this country. If he cared about this country at all, he's get behind Trump. But that ship has sailed now, desanctomonious has shown his true colors.

As long as Trump is appointing judges, the Second Amendment will be fine.

Sorry to disappoint you but I haven’t seen where any of the other Republican candidates have spoken out about Lujan’s blatant unconstitutional move against the second amendment. Nothing from Trump or the others Not a word. Just DeSantis, leading the way.

It’s funny because I’ve been told on this very website that Mitch McConnell is the one who controlled Trump’s judicial nominations. But maybe that’s only when it’s a judge people don’t like, and Trump has only appointed the good ones. You Trumpers don’t even see the breakdowns in the logic of your arguments.

What's wild is losers like you on this site. Trump is the 2024 republican nominee and your only goal is to damage him anyway you can. You belong over at DU along with the other biden/desanctomonious losers.

Trump is not the nominee. It is 150 days until the first votes are cast. Today, he is simply one of several candidates. That’s all. Nothing more, nothing less. And your harassing people, insults, name calling won’t change that.

McConnell was the one who got the judges through confirmation, but the President is the one who nominates the judges - at least here in the US.
