Biden fails crisis management in Hawaii; DeSantis shines in Florida
Washington Times ^ | September 9, 2023 | Michael McKenna

One legitimate measurement of the readiness and capability of a candidate to be president is how he or she responds to a crisis.

In a moment of crisis, the core of human beings is on display. Some people wither; others shine. Either way, it is always a peek into the foundation of the person — his or her value system.

We had two examples of this recently, as both President Biden and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had the opportunity to respond to crises, in the wake of the devastating fire on Maui and Hurricane Idalia, respectively.

How did they do?

Unfortunately, the president embarrassed himself...

In comparison, Mr. DeSantis .... made a prompt and decisive decision to leave the presidential campaign trail to prepare for the hurricane. The thorough preparations of his administration meant that Floridians had roads cleared, power restored in record time, aid delivered to affected communities, and bridges and airports returned to operation quickly.

The DeSantis administration’s around-the-clock work eased the burden for those in the storm’s path and let families focus on getting back on their feet. The governor even fed his citizens, serving them barbecue, Chick-fil-A and, of course, Waffle House.

Apart from that, Mr. DeSantis radiated calm and confidence. In the event of a natural disaster or any other crisis, those qualities are essential in a leader, in part because they help people summon their own strength and their own confidence.

...

In Hawaii, the federal and state governments — and their leaders — failed.

In Florida, Mr. DeSantis succeeded.

Crises expose character. Voters should think about that — and the experiences in Hawaii and Florida at the end of August and what it says about the people in charge — when they make decisions about who should lead us.

In Maui, local government incompetence may have killed hundreds, if not thousands. The only goal of local government is DEI; everything else, including public safety, is a collateral concern. It’s what we vote for and pay for.

DeSantis didn't just step up and lead. He is much better than that.

DeSantis anticipates events and has plans in place to deal with them. DeSantis thinks way ahead.

Those hurricane supplies and utility repair trucks didn't just appear from thin air. Planning for bad things takes years even during good weather.

DeSantis can see culture rot and he knows it will take planning and implementation to combat it and reverse course. I don't know of another leader at his level that is even willing to talk about opposing the cultural warfare that has been unleashed against civilization.

I like your comment and sense of logic.

What I do not like are those too dumb to see it and jump on the anti-DeSantis band wagon just because they read some anti-DeSantis propaganda.

He does have potential to fix America similar to that of Trump.

Trump’s biggest failure, the one that kept him out of office, was his poor judgement in picking agency leaders such as for the DOJ and FBI to name a couple. They were all back stabbers, including his VP. I do not think DeSantis would have this handicap.

It would be ideal if they could mend fences and run as a team.

My gut tells me the Maui Massacre signals Biden’s collusion with Xi and it may even involve testing Chinese technology for a subsequent Chinese takedown of Hawaii as a waystation to California. The Chinese likely have all our military facilities on the islands mapped.

Zipper? He must have an aid for that. Else, maybe that is what Harris is busy helping with since she has experience in that department.

They and the Japanese have been buying up Hawaii for years. Not much of a takeover required, especially considering the socialist progressive “elite” that are competing with them for Hawaiian lands.

He knows Hawaii will vote for him anyway.

Folks in Honolulu don’t give a rip about Maui anyway.

I am a little confused.

While I agree Biden appeared “tone deaf” during the Maui thing, I wonder what exactly did they expect him to “do.”

FEMA is there. Money is flowing in. The survivors will be able to rebuild. I would expect most of those homes had insurance.

I scratch my head at the number of people around here who don’t trust the government, who then expect the government to “do something.”

But then again, there are people around here who think it was all a Directed Energy Weapon. So there is that.

There are 41 missing as of now. 115 dead. All of the previous missing turned up. There are meetings seeking input from the community as how to proceed with rebuilding. The lunatic theories are falling apart. I live in Hawaii. Brush fires are common. Parts of have been evacuated due to brush fires before, even parts of Lahaina in 2018.
