Putin hates the US with an irrational passion and has delusions of grandeur about restoring the Russian Empire. The only thing he would value is the US conceding a new Russian sphere of influence in Eastern Europe, and after having given him what he wants we would have zero leverage left. And any concessions to Putin would be such a display of weakness that China would be even more emboldened to act in the Pacific.

Telling people what they want to hear to win the con, doesn’t work at foreign policy because it exposes the con.
