It was Friday night in the fall of 1981 at Milton Frank Stadium in Huntsville, Ala. Grissom High School was playing, and I was standing near Coach Stiles on the sidelines. The game was not going our way when Coach suddenly waved his arms in the air and yelled, “Herschel Walker, where are you?!”
It was one of those funny/not funny moments. Herschel was a sight to behold in college football back then and won the Heisman trophy the next year. Coach was invoking the name of the greatest running back of the day as a means of wishing he had a deeper bench to work with that evening under the lights.
Today, when I look at the state of politics, I want to yell, “Ronald Reagan, where are you?!”
We’ve just had the first GOP primary debate. I see statesmanlike demeanor in some of the candidates. There are some Reaganesque glimmers of hope. But there is no consistency yet.
I say yet because I sense a turning. There is growing dissatisfaction with status quo politics and establishment solutions. Regardless of who prevails in the end, we need a new face to rise.

Our candidates are a reflection of our society.
There was an article last night about how todays conservatives are of the burn it all down and Reganism is passé.
Reagan made sharp, mean comments about leftist government and Democrats in the 1960s and 1970s
Today’s deep-state GOP would most definitely call him “divisive,” “extremist,” and “unable to win elections.”
I wonder if Reagan would keep his genteel humor if the Dims in his day used continuous lawfare and indictments against him like they do Trump.

He was then too. There was a general fear of what he may do if elected.
Reagan NEVER did to America what Trump tried to do.
As they say, "If you strike at the king, you better make sure you kill him."
We should have burned it all down post Reagan. We would have saved ourselves several decades of a murderous rampaging .gov that followed.
G. Bush - Ruby Ridge
Clinton - Waco
W Bush - Open border invasion, forever wars
Obama - Whitey bad
Trump - Calm but out of control swamp
Biden - OMG
I'll take a Reagan or Trump any day.
What does that mean?
The notion that if Reagan were here today, things would be different is silly. It completely misapprehends the nature of our enemy and, in fact, buys into their narrative. Namely, it accepts that WE and OUR leaders are the problem.
Make no mistake, if Reagan were alive and running for office today the democrats would have him indicted and the GOPe would be lining up with them.
?
The biggest problem is people unthinkingly read stuff like this and then lose track of the fact that Trump is better than Reagan in every way that matters.
The Dims hated Reagan, but weren't as vicious about it. But they were more vicious against the next Republican prez: Bush Sr. Then more against Bush Jr. Now more against Trump. I hope DeSantis or Ramsaway or whoever else is the next Republican prez is ready for the Dims to be even worse against him.
I loved the man but he wouldn’t have stood a chance against todays communist leftists. We are in a fight and it’s people like this author who would only turn the country over to the left.
Anyone remember Dubyas years in the White House? They attacked him and he curled up into a ball and let them send wave after wave of our sons and daughters over to Iraq only to have them returned to us in flag draped caskets, or missing arms, legs, eyes, or so traumatized they killed themselves.
No, we don’t need a statesman, we need a fighter. And anyone who doesn’t realize that are just like the weaklings who stood around and watched when the American Revolution was fought.
“Ronald Reagan, where are you?!”
In heaven, giving amnesty to illegal immigrants and limiting God’s power to rule justly. “God is not the solution, He’s the problem”
Boringly stupid opinions and comments. YAWNER!
My first eligible election was in 1980. I voted Carter. Young and dumb and Ag roots. The one thing I remember about the campaign of 1980 was when Reagan said that Democrat energy policies only made us hot in the summer and cold in the winter. That statement is being magnified by Democrats today.
Democrats want everything short and you dependent.

I’ll take Reagan. I personally looked up to him. Yes, some of his 60’s and 70’s rhetoric concerned me, but his grandfatherly way and demeanor helped restore an America that was having an identity crisis after Vietnam, the radical aspects of feminism, the counter culture, black equality, race riots in most major cities, Manson, Watergate, Nixon’s pardon, the ravages of inflation and high interest rates, OPEC and gas rationing, Iran, the assignation of the Kennedy’s & MLK. Reagan restored our inner gravitas that despite our troubles, we were still a great nation of overall good people.
