Signing a contract for a six-figure contract used to allow Americans to feel as though they had made it. But now, $100,000 salary only goes so far — and its worth varies from city to city.

Across major U.S. cities, $100,000 can be worth as much as $86,444 and as little as $35,791, a recent SmartAsset study finds. The study compares the value of $100,000 across 76 major U.S. cities, accounting for cities' income taxes and cost of living.

Cities in the South, from Tennessee to Texas, dominated the top 10 cities where $100,000 goes the furthest. In Memphis, Tennessee, Americans can expect a $100,000 salary to offer a take-home value of $86,444.

On the other hand, in cities like San Francisco and New York, $100,000 does not go nearly as far. In SF, a $100,000 salary is worth only $36,445; in the Big Apple, it's worth just $35,791.

As inflation continues to affect consumers, here are the 10 U.S. cities where a $100,000 salary goes the furthest:

Tennessee and Texas have no income tax. I am sure that helps. It’s unbelievable they are writing stories like this when most Americans aren’t making 100k. Just imagine trying to survive NY & SF on half that if 100k is worth a third of that amount.

The temperatures are one thing. It’s the lack of rain that’s the bigger issue. A good portion of Texas is under drought conditions.

Fort Worth here, I’ve been watering morning, noon, and night.
My water bill is going to move me into the unaffordable bracket.

No state income tax in Texas, but if you happen to be lucky enough to own a home there, really high property tax rates.

$100K in large east, and west, coast cities won't get you rich. In Memphis,Kansas City or Fargo you can live large.

Kinda explains why people leave New York to relocate in the South, it’s not just the warmer weather, it’s the 25% savings on just about all expenses.

The range time and arsenal necessary to live in Memphis has to be figured into living expenses.

Mogadishu on the Mississippi isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but still is probably better than Detroit.

We have friends and family in Texas. They might not have state income tax, but the property taxes are high. Also pay personal property taxes on vehicles each year.
After you retire and your income decreases, you still have the high taxes.
I would rather pay a state income tax, and keep property taxes low.

If I can clear out the cats in my rent house from my freak tenant I’m hoping to contribute to affordable housing in H town. After 13 years we discover the on time rent payer is a serious cat hoarder. Did not sleep there...just the cats.

Any title which says “10” or “25” this or that is clickbait. Bypass them. Save your time. Nowadays , probably all AI generated stupidity.

The city doesn't matter. A dumbass won't live large anywhere.

It’s also selling their $800K house to live in a larger home for half that, or less.
