RINCON, Ga. — A Georgia Lowe’s store employee has been fired after trying to stop thieves from stealing thousands of dollars worth of stuff.

Police said three people came into the store in Rincon and loaded up their shopping cart with about $2,100 worth of merchandise.

As they were trying to leave the store without paying, employee Donna Hansbrough, 68, grabbed the cart, trying to stop them, police said.

[snip]

As for Hansbrough, she was fired from Lowe’s for violating the store’s policy, police said.

She had been employed at the store for 13 years.

The employee should have helped the "customer", even adding merchandise to his cart and wishing him a good day.

Maybe give the "customer" a card with the Loss Prevention phone number on it.

"Thank you for shop... er..umm... stopping by Lowe's".

This happened to our friend’s son earlier this year. He was a valued worker at Lowes here in South SF, Ca. A thief was trying to push a cart out the door with expensive merchandise, and a senior worker (in his 70’s) was trying to stop the thief but senior worker got assaulted. Friend’s son stepped in to help his co-worker and fought with the thief, managing to stop the assault on co-worker. They got fired for their efforts. So much for trying to help the Lowes company; they don’t support their staff.

It’s very easy to intimidate large corporations. Now some retailers won’t stop theft.

As long as the Democrats refuse to enforce laws, there’s very little citizens can do.

It takes a real man to punch a 68 year old woman three times.

Great response:

“It’s a resume builder. She’ll get 50X better job offers if she wants them.

There are lots of small and family-run companies, who want a loyal employee, who possesses a sense of justice and fair-play.”

Lowes and Home Depot are exactly alike except for the color scheme. I try not to shop at either of them if there is any alternative available.

I don’t think stopping the assault on a coworker should be ground for dismissal.

Hope she at least talks to a good lawyer about being injured because of unsafe working conditions.

About 7 years ago, I was working part-time for Lowe’s and saw a kid with a load of pricy, unrelated items in a shopping cart, heading for the exit. I stepped in front of the cart and he panicked, let go of the cart and dashed out the exit. His eyes looked vacant.

The manager on duty stepped up to me and told me that if I ever did that again, he would see me fired. I smiled at him and said, “Make my day!”.

A couple of months later, after being continually jacked around by the HR rep, I told them to take their job and shove it!

Just in case anyone doesn’t happen to already know, Lowe’s is Walmart and vice versa.

This sort of news article certainly prompts a response.

The proper thing for the company to do would be tell her thanks for her efforts but not to do that in the future as it could risk her life.

Absolutely!

Additionally, on behalf of the shareholders and for the future safety and wellbeing of the employees the store ought to go on the offense. Imagine the argument of an employee who gets hassled/injured on the premises by a thief when the store has made no attempt to thwart theft.

It would be quite easy and relatively inexpensive to install effective camera surveillance both inside and outside in the parking lot (to capture license numbers, identify cohorts, etc.) and then whenever possible, to bring both civil and criminal charges.

Lowes is basically telling the crooks they can do as they wish. Steal, punch the employees, walk out with their goods, and an experienced employee is fired.

It seems to me that Lowe’s current policies is the one putting their employees at risk. For she got injured and the thief got away.

She should sue and claim their policies caused her harm.

It seems to me that there’s a solution to this problem that Soros-type DAs have created in leftist cities (pretty much all big cities in America) by refusing to prosecute thefts over a certain amount. The stores could put in one-way entrances where the door only opens inward... and a double-exit system where the people leaving have to go through a glass-enclosed area where a security person monitors the outer door. If you walk out with merchandise you didn’t pay for, you don’t get through the outer door OR back into the store. You wait there until the cops show up and you’re standing there with the stolen goods. It ain’t that complicated, but apparently it’s too complex for the company owners to figure out.

An Aldi store I’ve been to already has a glass enclosure that you walk into when you are leaving. It could be set up to use that kind of security system. Perhaps the owners of Aldi were forward thinking. It makes more sense than locking up every single item behind glass and chains and locks on store coolers to thwart thieves. That just punishes the law abiding folks, which is typical leftist stupidity.

I got fed up years ago when Walmart put all of their spray paint behind locked glass. It wasn’t worth the bother to try to find someone to unlock the glass to buy from them, so I went to Home Depot, instead. The people making these decisions are not too awfully bright.

The problem is, of course, leftists. Unless or until we fix that problem of refusal to prosecute thieves (because that would be “racist”)... these idiocies will continue.

Lawyers and civil lawsuits ruined a lot of aspects of normal society. This is one of those aspects.

Nonetheless, he's now working somewhere else.
