A Rivian customer waited 3 years for his dream car. It died within days.

When Chase Merrill took his first ride in his new Rivian R1S, it was his favorite car that he had ever driven. Merrill, 24, put down a deposit on an R1S three years ago at the urging of family members who also own Rivians. He was unsure about making the switch from his 2015 Ford Edge to a fully electric SUV, especially since he lives in a relatively remote area in the Adirondack Mountains, New York.

But once he got behind the wheel of the $85,626 car on March 10, those worries melted away. "I was in a honeymoon phase," Merrill said in an interview with Insider. "It's an incredible car, and it handles unlike anything I've ever driven" — but the honeymoon didn't last long. Two days later, Merrill drove his R1S to his family's shared property in the mountains. He wanted to put his rugged electric SUV to the test, so he drove it on the unplowed, snow-covered road into the property. At first, the R1S sliced through the snow. Then, a large snowdrift stymied the car, he said.

How in the world does the stock of this company keep going up? Unbelievable. People are in for a world of hurt on the Rivian trucks and the stock eventually.

It goes up the way an alcoholic feels no pain until the crash.
Then it’s potentially fatal.

24 years old and he can afford a $85K truck?

Sorry. No sympathy, if he does not do his due diligence in researching the brand/model/class of vehicle he wants.

I assume these cars rust like others. $85,000 is a lot to pay. I would drive a junker in the winter.

I don’t see the attraction of the Rivian.

I do like the Lucid sedans though - great candidates for an LSx/T56 swap.

Are the usual sources of information on vehicles providing unbiased, realistic reviews on EVs so due diligence can be done? Or are they filled with enviro-propaganda pushing electric vehicles as not only inevitable, but desirable?

Perhaps the entire thing is an exercise in artificial INtelligence.

" When Chase Merrill took his first ride in his new Rivian R1S, it was his favorite car that he had ever driven. "

My wife is Filipina and I often send stuff to my in-laws in The Philippines . . . I use Google translate and I can attest to the way WE AMERICANS speak does not match to just about any other language on the planet, INCLUDING American Sign Language !

No English speaker would ever say, " . . . it was his favorite car that he had ever driven. "

A robo-monkey might.

“The brand-new Rivian ultimately had to be loaded onto a flatbed and driven to a service center in Chelsea, Massachusetts, hundreds of miles away. The towing fee was $2,100”

i>Are the usual sources of information on vehicles providing unbiased, realistic reviews on EVs so due diligence can be done?

If not, don't buy the vehicle.

Or are they filled with enviro-propaganda pushing electric vehicles as not only inevitable, but desirable?

Make that decision and figure it out. Propaganda pushers are not very bright, so they can't hide it. If this is the case, do not buy it.

Sounds pretty simple to me.

Interesting the timing of this article. Just the other day there was an article here of someone in Columbus Ohio getting a $42,000 repair estimate for a Rivian that was involved in a minor rear end collision. Insurance Co. estimated $1500, repair shop estimated $42,000

So, Rivian = Expensive to Buy, Expensive to Repair, and now seems it’s also unreliable. $85K well spent!!!!!

I just never understood spending that much money on a car.

It gets you from A to B, regardless of how much you pay for it.

The same way Tesla stock went up before it even started making money. It's hype and hope.

No one is so bad/stupid that they cannot serve as a good example.

he said that he accidentally triggered a safety feature that got the car stuck between the park and drive gears.

So Rivians suck because of a safety feature?

The guy got his truck stuck in a snow bank that his previous Ford Edge could never have navigated. So his stupidity in driving into a snow drift combined with his stupidity in trying to improperly yank the truck out of the snowbank resulting in the triggering of a safety feature means that Rivians are bad vehicles?

There's lots of reasons to hate on Rivians, their price, their electric range, their limited utility as an actual pickup truck, but one owner's stupidity ain't one of 'em.

He was too young when he signed the loan documents. He can't be held responsible for that. He was tricked into it.

It is only fair that the tax payers are forced to pay back the loan for him.

I still drive my $26K 2014 Honda Accord.
Doesn’t break down, good gas mileage, and it gets me to my destination.

P.T. Barnum was right all along <

Great song from that show:

There's a sucker born every minute
Each time the second hand sweeps to the top
Like dandelions up they pop
Their ears so big, their eyes so wide
And though my tale is bonafide baloney
Just let me spin it
And ain't no man who can resist me wait and see
'Cause there's a sure-as-shooting sucker born a minute
And friends the biggest one excluding none is me

I won’t even buy the FIRST year model refresh for an existing vehicle. Like for example the Chevy trucks the that new 3.0 diesel first year run.

Why in the world would someone be the first to purchase a completely new unproven design?
