Jay Leno remembers defying a general's warning and roasting President Reagan: 'Do not denigrate him'

Comedian Jay Leno reminisced about how he once ignored a decorated general's warning and roasted President Ronald Reagan at a White House Correspondents' Dinner in the early 1980s.

Appearing on "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Leno shared an anecdote about what happened backstage before the big event. Leno was prepared to have some fun at the president's expense, but as he was getting his notes ready, a general reportedly confronted him.

"That's the president of the United States, you understand?" Leno said the general told him. "That is my commander-in-chief. You do not denigrate him. You do not make fun of him. He is the president of the United States. He is my commander. Do you understand?"

I am guessing Reagan would have been fine with it

I agree. He would have likely looked with some disappointment on the tight-ass General.

He didn’t need any protecting.

Reagan would have rolled with it, most likely. Try doing the same to a Dim, and see what you get.

Reagan was fine with Don Rickles, so Jay Leno was small potatoes.

Reagan had an “R” behind his name AND was a conservative.

Remember when George Bush I invited Dana Carvey to the White House Christmas Party (1991, I believe) to do his SNL George Bush character? He made fun of Bush barfing on the Japanese Prime Minister, made fun of him debating Ross Perot, etc...

These earlier Republicans were not so thin-skinned as our woke marxist leaders are now.

I doubt this story. I remember comedians declaring that they couldn’t make Obama jokes because there wasn’t anything funny about him.

I’m glad Schultz was nearby, and told Jay to “Nail Ronnie’s
a** to the wall!”

Jay;”What about what the General just said?”

Schultz: “Screw him. He works for me!”

Ahh, the good old days. Back when we had a functioning republic, and our representatives knew the limits of their office.

Oh wait, there was one good Obama impersonator, but he died.

Comedy died in that era. Like a light switch being thrown. It is now a commandment, and they will throw yer ass in jail.

Thanks! It sounds like total BS to me, too.

No general is going to say something that lickspittle, at least back in the Reagan days.

Nowadays, perhaps...

Well they wouldn’t defend Trump, but hands off Biden!

You can if you're black, like Dave Chappelle.

I saw a YouTube clip of Pres Reagan with Don Rickles. And Don Rickles was being classic Don Rickles, and Pres Reagan was laughing and taking it all in good fun.

Leno wasn’t Colbert. Reagan probably didn’t mind Jay’s jokes.

Nothing is more pathetic than when military officers or other personnel try to give orders to civilians or speak to them like they are in Boot Camp. The appropriate response is “up yours Gomer.”

Well I take that back, there is one thing more pathetic. That’s an officers wives believe they wear the rank of their husband and talk down to wives of lower ranking men.

Leno got tired of not being able to tell jokes about Obama and eventually started. He used to mock the audience for their oohs and ahs when he started telling Obama jokes.

Exactly. Reagan loved good humor and comedy. He would’ve been disappointed hadn’t been some mild mannered act. And J Leno is a pretty honest standup guy, so it probably happened just that way.

The one comedian who really went after Michelle Obama was Bill Burr. And he did a fantastic job.
