US warns of potential 5G delays for airplanes without updated altimeters.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned Friday of potential delays starting July 1 for airplanes that have not yet had radio altimeters updated to address potential 5G C-Band interference and urged them to adjust schedules if needed.

While more than 80% of the domestic fleet serving U.S. airports has been updated, Buttigieg wrote in a letter to Airlines for America (A4A) "we continue to see a significant number of aircraft still awaiting retrofit, including many operated by foreign air carriers. This means on bad-weather, low-visibility days in particular, there could be increased delays and cancellations."

Concerns that 5G service could interfere with airplane altimeters, which give data on a plane's height above the ground and are crucial for bad-weather landing, led to brief disruptions at some U.S. airports last year as international carriers canceled some flights.

A4A, which represents major U.S. carriers, said carriers are working to update altimeters "but global supply chains continue to lag behind current demand.... A4A member carriers are confident in their ability to maintain the integrity of their schedules, despite the impending deadline."

I haven't flown since July 1996 -- when TWA800 was shot down -- so it doesn't affect my plans, but many millions will be "inconvenienced", once again. Nice job, Sec Petey Butt-Boy! Maybe you should go on "permanent maternity leave"...

Buttigieg added Friday "passengers must not bear the brunt of any airline’s inability to equip sufficient aircraft to be able to operate safely in the 5G C-band environment."

So the faggot will allow flights to be delayed and cancelled so that passengers don’t “bear the brunt”.

Throw the eff’n faggot into a mental institution for his perversions. He can’t even think straight. (That’s a pun, for the slow people.)

He’s a sick creature, alright. Makes me nauseous to even see his perverted, degenerate, deviant face in an article’s pic.

Foreign carriers’ aircraft already land in 5G environments in other countries.

General aviation may have more of a problem.

Radar altimeter also known as radio altimeter is not as I remember a primary instrument for flight. So what the H E double Q is pete talking about?

...and speaking of flight I made my decision at 9-11. Had to modify that a couple of times but generally due to the smoke and mirrors of the intrusive TSA. I much prefer profiling which is how the Israelis get it done. You make the perp sweat, and leave granny alone.

It’s a shame that the American people are paying for an expensive organization looking for “things” rather than intent to do harm, and harassing the American people in the process.

Been out of the cockpit for quite a few years. Never had nor needed a radio altimeter.
However, they are probably now mandated for commercial and ifr flights.

I flew on a few Russian planes in the 70s so not much can scare me today but I’m keeping my feet on the ground. If I can’t get somewhere in the car, then I don’t need to go.

Buttegig has really flopped, American Airlines is blaming him for the flight delays due to staff shortages.

Bigtime ditto that!

No.

Radio altimeters are not required for IFR UNLESS you are equipped and qualified for other than a Cat I ILS approach.

Thanks for the clarification. Good reminder not to speculate.

Shortages of qualified Air traffic Controllers is nationwide.

>Radio altimeters are not required for IFR UNLESS you are equipped and qualified for other than a Cat I ILS approach.<

It’s deeper than that. Depending on aircraft, the radio altimeters may be integrated into the Predictive Wind Sheer (PWS) system, Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EPGWS),Proximity Switch Electronic Unit (PSEU), and a whole slew of other systems utilizing the Avionics Standard Communications Bus (ASCB).

Depending on the Minimum Equipment List (MEL) it could be a really complicated operation just to be able to dispatch the flight with passengers on board.

My question is why was 5G approved if there was interference with this frequency band? Would a 50 year old white guy engineer have caught this problem? :=)

Great observation.

To answer your question, I went to the Master Minimum Equipment List for the B737 (all variants).

For an inoperative radio altimeter, the restrictions in the more advanced 737’s included:

May be inoperative
deactivated provided:
a) Approach minimums or
operating procedures do not
require its use,
b) Associated autopilot is not
used for approach and
landing,
c) Autothrottle is not used for
approach and landing, and
d) Associated flight director is
not used for approach and
landing.

On the 737 300/400/500 was the additional limitation about GPWS that you referred to.

As have I. I did have one in most of the multi-engine USAF aircraft I flew. Used them often especially on final in the weather. Probably required for the zero zero conditions landings. Well, maybe not zero zero, some sort of low viz condition where the computer can land the airplane.
