Environmental group forms to oppose Michigan EV battery plant

A group calling itself Mecosta Environmental and Security Alliance has formed to oppose the planned Gotion electric vehicle battery component factory in Mecosta County.

The non-profit organization is seeking to stop the construction of the Gotion plant in Green Charter Township, citing environmental and national security concerns . The group’s website claims the plant would risk harming significant wetland parcels around the proposed site. A screenshot of the map is below.

The organization aims to raise awareness, educate the community, and fund legal efforts to stop the construction of this facility.

The group’s formation follows the federal government approving the project and the state apparently not performing an environmental impact report. Records requests filed by The Center Square with the state environmental agency seeking environmental reports came back denied because the documents don’t exist.

The board of directors for the organization includes local community leaders: Jason Kruse, Bruce Baker, Teri Hook, Mary Engelsman, and former Congressman and Ambassador Peter Hoekstra.

"Ambassador Hoekstra has been a tremendous ally to our work, and we are thrilled to have him on the MESA board, working side-by-side with our community as we take the next step forward to stop Gotion from taking over our home," MESA President Jason Kruse said in a statement.

The plant acted as a flashpoint to Michiganders after a September 23 letter from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation offering Gotion up to $1.14 billion in subsidies counting state, local and utility incentives.

Those tax breaks include a $125 million Critical Industry Program grant for a local job creation requirement; a 30-year Renaissance Zone to Mecosta County valued at $540 million; and a $50 million Strategic Site Readiness Program performance-based grant.

Some oppose the 30-year tax breaks offered to the company, while others worry about Gotion’s connection to the Chinese Communist Party. Gotion insists that it isn't controlled by the CCP.

The nonprofit seeks donations to fund ongoing legal actions against Gotion.

“So much for a consistent national policy.”

What do you mean, the policy is VERY CONSISTENT. IT is to end the ability of the Middle Class (and lower) to drive cars. That is the “National Policy” with this bunch.

Not stupid at all, this is not an environmental group in the true sense of the word.

The Mecosta Environmental and Security Alliance was created to oppose the construction of the battery plant which IS a Chinese owned company by using the environmental arguments......

Normally I consider the "greenie-weenies" to be like watermelons: Green on the outside but RED on the inside--but in this case I will make an exception.

Sorry, but I don't believe that they want the middle class to end driving cars.

They know that is too radical for the middle class or even those who live paycheck to paycheck. They want them to drive electric vehicles, powered by moonbeams, solar electric, wind power, etc. However, the platitudes they propose are not feasible as the existing power grid can't support that kind of electric vehicle power supply.

I don't think that the progressive left is smart enough to understand what they are proposing will not work.

I am a firm believer in Hanlon’s razor which is an adage or rule of thumb that states, “....Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity...”

If ending driving cars was their real goal, I honestly think that they are not smart enough to hide that.

If it were out in the open, everyone from the car companies, to the people would be screaming to the heavens. Without any form of cars, the car companies, the car repair companies, the car tire companies would all be out of business.

If it were out in the open, even government would say.......NO! Without road taxes (license plate fees), gasoline taxes, per mile driving taxes, how would government pay for road maintenance and road improvements? Where would government get money for maintaining roads for buses and light rail? Where would government get money to pay for bridge maintenance, street cleaning, etc.

So if the political elite really want to stop people from totally driving, the rebellion will come from all quarters. That is why I think those pushing the agenda are just stupid .
