Bullshit! That’s their official statement. I doubt it’s anywhere near that.
I spent many years doing research at the National Archives, going through military and pension records, court-martial records, etc. for Civil War soldiers. NARA wasn’t even in possession of all Union Civil War soldier records. There were times they told me they didn’t have the records I was seeking. At one point, I had to write my Congressman to get the records from the VA who shouldn’t have had them since the war had been over for 136 years at the time. Nobody from the Archives bothered to match up their microfilm records with their actual holdings, or they would have known they were missing those records. The Archives is clueless in regards to actually knowing what the frig they’ve got in their possession.
