Tracking black bear sightings in Nashville
WKRN Nashville ^ | 6-15-23 | Nolan

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Multiple sightings of a black bear have been reported in Middle Tennessee over the last week.

On June 7, a bear was spotted in the Lewisburg area of Marshall County. The next day it was seen on Barker Road near Columbia.

What appears to be the same bear continued northward into Williamson County, spotted in Thompson Station.

It was next seen in Nashville in the Paragon Mills Road area. Most recently, it was seen a few miles south of there on Townes drive

Now that the bear is being sighted in Nashville in a highly populated area, the question is—with so many people, kids, and pets around, how do authorities plan to address it?

“No, we don’t plan on euthanizing or moving or relocating the bear,” explained Tabitha Lavacot from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency. “The bear is a transient bear that has been pushed out of the den most likely. This time of the year, the mothers push the young males out. Unless that bear exhibited behavior that gave us reason to relocate him, which he has not, we want him to just move through.”

This bear likely headed to cheatham county wildlife area of 25,000 remote acres only 12 miles northwest of urban Nashville. These latest sightings are very urban like Yonkers or Buckhead or park cities Dallas. I guess it moves mostly at night on creek greenways. Folks pick them up fairly frequently near where I live in Williamson on trail cams near leipers fork or old Natchez trace. Always more bear and panthers than what experts admit to around . It likely came fairly close to us

Animal control in most states tranquilize and relocate black bears that wander into cities from the forests. Cities are dangerous environments for bears and they shouldn't get too comfortable there, "a fed bear is a dead bear."

Very urban

We have black bears all over the place here...not news. A wildlife management friend told us he got a call from a woman in the next town over asking to collect a bear. He asked where she was calling from and with hesitation, told her that’s the area they relocate the bears to. Lol.

Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona just reported a black bear attack in Groom Creek, south of Prescott, this morning. Possibly one person killed, they are confirming. Bear was also killed.

Fairly uncommon in an area of Nashville with pop density of 4000/sq mile

We do get sightings in middle tn since they roam so much

It seems the homes of black bear here lie from the Cumberland plateau or what northerners eventually call the Allegheny Mts all the way to Appalachians

And maybe some swamp country in west TN

I think I read every state has black bear presence even if transient

Even RI

Except Hawaii

My daughter had a 400lbs range black bear on her porch(they keep their garbage up because of this issue) a couple of weeks ago. Her husband goes to work at 5:00am and encountered him when he was about to let their dog out to use the bathroom. He made noises, yelled, waved his arms, all the usual things you are told to do. The bear slowly walked about 20 ft away, sat down and growled at him.

He retrieved his .12gauge and loaded up two #8 birdshots on the front end and three slugs on the back end. The bear was ambling around the driveway and not inclined to leave so he put a #8 load right into the bears behind. He jumped and took off running, stung him good.

They had called the game warden for the same bear a couple of months ago and his response, well there is nothing we can do. They told him we have a dog and a five year old! Sorry we can’t help you. The game warden previous to this clodhopper had told me several times, if a bear persists, #8 loads in the rump so we follow his advice.

A week later he heard the neighbor firing around 5:00am and the same bear was trying to get into his chicken coop. They haven’t seen it since.

My wife’s aunt was terribly ill a week or so ago with a stomach bug that lasted five days. At one point she had unlocked her car for her daughter to get something out and she said I felt too bad to get up and get the key fob and lock the car doors back after she left. The next morning her daughter found where a bear had managed to get the door open on her Cadillac SUV and absolutely shred one of her leather seats. They are getting plentiful in Kentucky and more bear hunts need to be allowed.

Yikes Sarge! Now I have to worry about my cars too?! Meanwhile, all the beehives are electric fenced in and a mama and her cubs have been strolling through the garlic crop back and forth to blueberry field. Thanks for pro-gamer tip of the bird shot!
Year's ago, when a bear had ripped apart a portion of the cornfield, I asked my husband, "When do you think the bear is eating the corn?" He replied, "Whenever he wants." It's true.

My Mother In Law lives in an old, established suburb of Asheville, NC. They have bears all over the place: walking the sidewalks, sleeping in garages and carports. The residents all set their car alarms off before going out of the house to scare off any bears near their cars. This has been going on for several years.

We had a literal mountain top home at grandfather mountain for 30 years

We had to have bear proof garbage cans

My Doberman would go crazy at the back window and bears would be at the window snarling at him lol

U were careful going outside at night

This bear is crossing dense urban sprawl to get to where he’s going unless he turns east

I mean he’s 5-6 miles into the high pop city area as of yesterday

I assume he’ll show up today

Prolly on lower broad headed to kid rocks club

Seriesly the two bear pockets near here are cheatham county wildlife refuge and fort Campbell

He’ll have to swim the Cumberland for that

Cheatham is much closer and 25,000 acres very dense and rugged

He thinks he’s a coyote I guess
