A sonic boom was heard across the Washington, DC, area Sunday afternoon when military jets raced after an unresponsive private plane that crossed into restricted airspace and later crashed, killing all four people onboard.
The deafening boom rang out when two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to investigate the aircraft that was not responding to radio transmissions shortly after 3 p.m., according to the Department of Defense.
Residents around the capital and surrounding communities were left bewildered until more information came out.
The F-16s were deployed after the private Cessna flew into restricted airspace over the capital before it crashed in southwest Virginia.
The fighter jets saw that the pilot of the plane appeared to have passed out, a US official told ABC News.
Rescuers were able to reach the site of the plane crash hours later on foot in a rural part of Shenandoah Valley, and no survivors were found, according to police.
The aircraft departed Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Elizabethton, Tennessee, heading for Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
It had reached the New York area before making a nearly 180-degree turn and flying toward Virginia, according to the flight-tracking website Flight Aware.

O2? Not that I am aware of. But pressurization drops are alarmed. It just depends on the flight crew getting their masks on in time. If they don’t - with a locked cockpit door - the flight is over when the fuel runs out.
It is interesting that it went down shortly after DC in a very rural area. What is the range of the Citation? Would a pilot not fill up before departing. Guessing the distance traveled was in the neighborhood of 1000 miles. +/-600 miles from Elizabethton, TN to NYC and another +/-400 back to Montebello, VA. I thought a jet such as a Cessna Citation would have a longer range than that.
There was no reason to shoot it down when it was at altitude. If they did they would take on the liability of the crash.
The F-16 pilots can also tell if the pilot is in control of the aircraft. I am sure they know what was going on once they got there.
But our government was quick to lie to us that the sonic boom was merely the Air Nation Guard on an exercise mission.
The first bit of “fake news” we heard was in a report on NBC when they said the President was safe because he was not at the White House rather he was out playing golf. Seriously, three of us sitting watching the news heard that and looked at each other, rolled our eyes and laughed.
similar thing to payne stewart’s plane. The oxygen gave out or the pilot just passed out.
very suspicious....
The weird thing is they said they lost contact on the ascent.
IIRC Stuart’s plane flew for quite a while before it ran out of fuel.
they lie.
Haven’t you noticed?
“the pilot of the plane appeared to have passed out”
Safe & effective™.
Define “shortly after”.
Shenandoah is not real close to DC. Takes a good hour and half to drive due west to the valley mountains and river.
No, it went over populated area yet ended up 100 mi away in rural area.
And it was bound for NYC area and was there, then did an amazing 180 turn. There was plenty of population center all along that route of the northeast corridor, both ways.
Very possible if the cabin pressurization system failed, or never was activated. As the aircraft climbed, oxygen levels in the cabin lowered, and you just start feeling confusion then pass out. It would be so gradual that the pilot and passengers may not have even realized what was happening.
Military pilots are trained in a high altitude chamber to recognize the early signs of hypoxia.
They weren't driving. They were flying. In a jet.
I also heard this guy was a Trump donor.
Accidents can be arranged.
“Accidents can be arranged.”
Just ask JFK, Jr., who considered running against Hillary in NYS.
I don’t believe anything coming out of fedgov, but why does the post think that the plane’s owner, being a Trump supporter, is relevant to the crash?
I heard that it was set on autopilot to go to New York and then return to place of of original take off.
I was just thinking about Payne Stewart about 24 hours ago
Scary 😱
