ALBANY – Controversial “Clean Slate” legislation will no longer allow murder convictions and other serious felonies to get sealed after Albany Democrats tweaked bill language on Monday.
The proposal would allow convicted people to apply to have their crimes nixed from their records after they serve their sentences, parole, and probation as well as a period of three years for misdemeanors and eight years for felonies.
Narrowing the scope of the bill, which also exempts sex crimes, comes as Albany Democrats near a final deal on passing the bill before the scheduled end of the 2023 legislative session on Friday.
“This is the closest we’ve ever been on Clean Slate,” state Sen. Zellnor Myrie (D-Brooklyn), who is sponsoring the bill, told reporters last week.

In two years they will put those back in.
There should not be any “clean slate” bill. They have decriminalized crime and criminalized normal actions.
Their real goal is to protect child sex offenders.
Why do this? If anything, they should create a public registry of all felons, not hide them.
If you know without a doubt that someone who commits murder shouldn't be treated like a murderer, but someone who may possibly be a descendant of slave owners should be treated like a slave owner ... you might be a Democrat.
Get ready for another uptick in crime from convicted criminals. Dems do the exact opposite of what should be done to reduce crime.
According to your theory, every white person in NYS should be able to point to the Clean Slate rule when it comes to reparations.
I like it.
