Unfortunately, Americans hate them and the market has listened. Less than 6% of cars sold today in the United States have stick shifts.

I certainly can't blame the younger generations for not knowing how to operate one when it's no more likely that they'll ever encounter a car with a manual transmission than they'll need to know how to operate a hand-crank starter.

Part of the problem is that manufacturers are dropping them in favor of CVT transmissions ("trannies") so they can achieve CAFE regulated fuel consumption levels. It's kind of a vicious cycle.
