Three Cases in North Carolina, Decades of Democracy Undone (mega barf)
Slate ^ | May 7, 2023 | GENE NICHOL

A new Republican majority on the state Supreme Court is making its preferences known.

I’m not certain North Carolina has become the most anti-democratic state in the union. But over the past dozen years, we’ve surely joined the hunt. Our General Assembly has enacted, according to reviewing judges, among the largest, most pervasive racial gerrymanders ever presented to a federal court. Lawmakers used “surgical precision” to deny Black Tar Heels the right to vote. They created the most bald-faced and unrepentant political gerrymanders seen in modern America. They’ve effectively overturned municipal elections when they didn’t like the outcome. And they gutted gubernatorial powers when voters had the gall to elect a Democratic candidate—violating the first premise of democratic governance, that when you lose an election, you don’t burn down the governor’s mansion, you go home, ponder your mistakes, lift yourself off the mat, and try again. We’re pros in thwarting democracy here. True believers.

Last week, a newly transformed and newly Republican North Carolina Supreme Court announced it was becoming a full, faithful, and enthusiastic partner in the ongoing crusade to achieve disabling electoral suppression. November’s election had delivered notable changes to the high court’s membership. A 4-3 Democratic majority gave way, in January, to a domineering 5-2 Republican tribunal. And the newly empaneled majority clearly had the work of its predecessor in its sights. On April 28, the Court issued three major decisions, all by the predictable partisan margins, which the Charlotte Observer deemed “sweeping blows to democracy in North Carolina.”

The rulings were handed down, and timed, in a display designed to connote the announcement of sea change. A new sheriff was in town. All former pretenders should now give way.

So the 3 are:

Racist Voter ID targeting blacks

Republican Gerrymandering (Court says legislature per NC Constitution has the power) which keeps blacks from proper representation.

Criminals get right to vote back only after completing all requirements which targets blacks.

Basically the author is saying it doesn't matter what the Constitution or law state as it is invalidated by any racial allegation.

As I read that opening slur . . . I kept waiting fort the reason every reasonable American attribute had been demolished and then, finally . . . the state Supreme Court went from Dem dominance to Rep dominance.

AHA !

Those dastardly black robes were the evil bastids !(intentional spelling)

I'll just bet chocolate milk is no longer legal in North Carolina

She must be unhappy that they might elect too many Mark Robinson types.

Law School Professor who doesn’t know the law. Typical college ‘professor’ that indoctrinates rather than teach.

They created the most bald-faced and unrepentant political gerrymanders seen in modern America.

The author seems to forget the 3rd District(Deomcrat) in Maryland. It mangles the central part of the state as it snakes its way northeast from Annapolis, then west, again eastward, and one more time northwest(ish) until it's close to the top of the state — passing in and out (and sometimes back in again) of four counties and Baltimore City. A federal judge likened it to a "broken-winged pterodactyl lying prostrate across the state" and also likened to "blood spatter at a crime scene."

Exactly correct. In the mind of present day Progressives, allegations of racism are the magic ticket to obtain everything they desire.

The author fails to acknowledge that NC Dems set the gerrymandering benchmarks with NC 12:

Why would she discuss Maryland in an article about North Carolina? That doesn’t make sense.

Why would she discuss Maryland in an article about North Carolina? That doesn’t make sense.

Because of this line.. "among the largest, most pervasive racial gerrymanders ever presented to a federal court"

With that line she isn't limiting her opinion to just NC. If she had said the most pervasive racial gerrymanders in the state, then she would be 'excused"
