Liberal advocacy groups that publish widely cited lists of purported "hate groups," tarring a diverse spectrum of conservative organizations, are facing defamation claims alleging they knowingly spread falsehoods about those organizations' beliefs and activities.
A federal judge recently refused to dismiss litigation against the 52-year-old Southern Poverty Law Center for designating the Georgia-based Dustin Inman Society, which promotes "legal, sustainable and reduced immigration," as an "anti-immigrant hate group."
The designation came seven years after SPLC told The Associated Press the label would be too strong for what it called a "nativist" group that works "through the political process." That has always been its approach, according to the April 2022 lawsuit by the society, which is named after a teenager killed by an illegal immigrant.
The Alabama-based civil rights organization made its name suing the Ku Klux Klan before turning its scrutiny on socially conservative groups such as the Family Research Council, whose hate-group designation prompted an attempted mass shooting at FRC's Washington D.C. office in 2012.

The Southern Poverty Law Center might have stated out with good intentions but they’re a hateful group now that does more damage that good.

One of the odd things is SPLC went through a time where they themselves were caught practicing racism and sexism not advancing Blacks and females. Morse Dees was kicked out. SPLC has been sued successfully before .

They are overdue from the time they started on Conservative groups as opposed to the KKK, Neo Nazis etc.
I’ve said for years that the SPLC is a hate group.
This couldn’t happen to a more deserving group.
Groups like the SPLC should not be able to operate in our country. Who thinks one group has a right to name another group as haters and then that group gets a label they don’t deserve and possible shut down? This SPLC IS a hate group that makes it’s money by lying to the public about people they don’t like.
The Southern Poverty Law Center was always a communist front group.
When the KKK faded away, they needed new groups to go after. It’s not like any such organization simply dissolves and people get jobs doing something else.
We may see similar behavior from the “Nazi hunter” groups, like the Simon Wiesenthal Center. I doubt they have the guts to go after Muslim jew-haters.
