DeSantis & Puerto Rico: A Demo☭rat State
Major Kalhoun DeSantis Research ^ | 02/24/2023 | Major Kalhoun

Why would DeSantis cosponsor this bill?

What was HR 6246?

What the bill does

The Puerto Rico Admission Act [H.R. 6246] would officially make the territory the 51st U.S. state, no later than 2021.

The bill was introduced by the territory’s nonvoting member of Congress, Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR0).

The state would gain two U.S. senators, plus five House representativesaccording to their population, as well as presidential voting rights.

How would the state likely vote? Unlike a potential Washington DC statehood, Puerto Rico is more up in the air. Their one nonvoting member of Congress is a Republican, though their governor is a member of the New Progressive Party which is similar to the Democrats. In Puerto Rico’s 2016 presidential primaries, 61 percent of votes were for Democrats.

Ron DeSantis’ Role?

Closing

Ron DeSantis was helping the Demo☭rats leverage Puerto Rico so as to gain an advantage in the House and, more importantly, the Senate. Now why would he do that? 🤔

No! If Puerto Rico wants to join the US, then make it a borough of New York City, and they can vote in New York elections.

Democrats might be in for a big surprise if P.R. were to become a state. Most Puerto Ricans don’t think like progressives or communists or socialist. In fact, the Puerto Rican vote was decisive in DeSantis’ win in Florida. And, Puerto Ricans have been leaving the blue cities and blue states and going to the red cities and states.

As a Puerto Rican myself, I don’t know any Puerto Rican that voted for Biden in the last election or that voted for Crist against DeSantis. Puerto Ricans like their freedoms and their religion, and democrats being anti-God and anti-family, is not how Puerto Ricans think.

Just know, if we get another State, say goodbye to the Stars and Stripes, because now they’ll have the perfect excuse to redesign the flag.

Haven’t there been numerous votes by Puerto Rican voters over the years, on issues of statehood or independence, and haven’t those votes been inconclusive? Is there a strong desire for becoming a state among people there?

Another issue I never hear anyone discuss, is, what benefit is there to the United States, to admit Puerto Rico as a state? Does anyone ever think about that, or consider that subject?

There are numerous American possessions, such as the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, which nobody has ever talked about as becoming states. Why is Puerto Rico so often talked about as becoming a state?

Trump was the president so clearly he had a hand in it.

No, this was one of those private member's bills that don't get the support of the White House or either party's congressional leadership, and so go nowhere. Ford, Reagan and both Bushes supported statehood for Puerto Rico, if the commonwealth voted for it. Trump wasn't opposed. Then later he was.

In any case, this seems like a blip for DeSantis. The bill wasn't going anywhere. He had Puerto Rican voters in his district. So he signed on. As president, DeSantis would have a different constituency, and his view might be different. Also, the support of past Republican presidents reminds us that the country wasn't always as divided as it is now, and perhaps won't be as divided in the future (though it may take Divine intervention to pull that off).

In Puerto Rico, Jeb Bush pushes for statehood

April 29, 2015

https://www.cnn.com/2015/04/28/politics/jeb-bush-puerto-rico-statehood/index.html

Jeb Bush reiterated his support for Puerto Rico statehood on Tuesday, telling a crowd that he’s long been a backer of the movement to make the U.S. territory the 51st state.

The former Florida governor and likely presidential candidate made the comments during a string of public events on the commonwealth, where he spent months campaigning for his father, George H.W. Bush, during his failed 1980 presidential campaign.

“Puerto Rican citizens, U.S. citizens, ought to have the right to determine whether they want to be a state. I think statehood is the best path, personally,” he said at Universidad Metropolitana de Cupey in San Juan. “I have believed that for a long, long while. I’m not new to this.”

This bill was introduced on June 27, 2018. I'm sure that theories will abound -- do any Florida FReepers have any insights into this? Was it just a sop to Puerto Rican voters, knowing it didn't have a chance of passing? (See, there's a theory right there.) < /G!>

even AOC?

AOC is Puerto Rican only when it benefits her, but, she's not Puerto Rican at heart. And most Puerto Ricans would disavow her politics and stupidity.

The problem is, in PR, all the signs are in Spanish, they are not bilingual, and so admitting PR will essentially make us like Canada, which will essentially make English and Spanish on equal terms.

Neither do most Americans, but since no-excuse-cheat-by-mail-in ballots came about in 2020 due to the scamdemic, there is no enforced signature verification, and Democrats have 'won' using this scam after stopping the counting to see how many ballots they need to create. And nothing was done about getting rid of it for the 2022 Midterms. Just ask Kari Lake. And it will be there for 2024, now that enough Democrats have 'won' over the last 2 cycles.
