Six people were killed Wednesday when a car crashed into a work zone on Interstate 695 in Baltimore County and struck multiple construction workers.
The crash near Woodlawn on the Baltimore Beltway left the driver hospitalized, authorities said. It occurred around 12:41 p.m. on the Inner Loop before Exit 17 to Security Boulevard.
The driver of a gray Acura entered a work zone, going between temporary Jersey barriers and striking multiple construction workers before the vehicle flipped over onto its back, police said.
Maryland State Police said that six people were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
The identities of the deceased are being held while their next of kin are being notified.
In a tweet, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski offered condolences to the victims.
“We offer our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in today’s tragic crash,” Mr. Olszewski tweeted.
Maryland State Police have not yet identified the driver of the gray Acura, nor what caused him to enter the construction zone.

What, the signs didn’t work? The ones that say “$9000.00 fine for killing road worker”? Maybe he thought “I can handle that.”
I always get nervous when I’m near such a zone on an Interstate.
Agree 100%..
There is always the chance that the driver had a medical event like a stroke or heart attack. Hard to imagine this happening in the middle of the day just due to negligence. Could be but let’s wait and see.
That throws off his math. Now he owes over $100,000.
We definitely need some “common sense” vehicle control for assault vehicles. Enough is enough! “Thoughts and prayers” for construction workers no longer work! Hrumpf! Hrumpf! Ban cars and trucks NOW!!!
Horrible. I don’t recall ever hearing of 6 workers being killed before.
Texting et al. or Mary Jane et al. would be my guess.
For the sake of the driver, I hope your charitable interpretation is correct. It stinks no matter how the thing slices out.
As I grow older, I am more inclined towards the death penalty.
Pope Francis has helped me to develop my thoughts on this issue.
I’d also be happy enough if the driver were confined to Pope Francis’ quarters until one of them died. It’s probably more than he will end up serving in Maryland.
Chances are those highway workers are illegals working for a contractor.
It’s not just the work zones — I can barely stand to be on the roads anymore, and I love to drive! Everybody speeds, drives carelessly, is texting or talking on their phones, etc. It’s amazing how bad it is these days.
Having said that … I do believe we are eventually going to reach a point where road work will not be permitted in any location where the road is not completely closed to traffic, or (at a minimum) the work zone can be separated from active travel lanes by concrete barriers that meet the crash standards of a New Jersey Turnpike Authority or Ontario Ministry of Transport center median barrier.
Woman, 54, “changing lanes” according to Baltimore Sun.
Maryland drivers…appears that at least he/she was trying to pass on the left, a rarity for MD drivers, but then entered the work zone.
This was a terrible, terrible thing.
BUT, please do not go off half-cocked about drivers.
Especially hate it when people go on about “speed”. THAT IS A NON-SEQUITUR HERE. Someone drive INTO the zone and speed is irrelevant…and I say anyway, you’re just as dead at 50 as at 70.
We still don’t know what all really happened.
But here is more info: a woman was driving the Acura that drove INTO the zone through the access space. THAT is the danger!
Word is that another car WAS involved, a VW, and that that driver did cooperate. Supposedly there was some attempted lane-change and the VW hit the Acura and made it go into the zone.
This may be more about mistakes with poor visuals than anything. And todays “safe” cars don’t make us safer when they are designed to protect us IN a collision tprather than allowing us to SEE well to PREVENT the collision (common complaint I’ve had of car design for years…I can’t see a damn thing no matter which way I turn).
Let’s not condemn people without full facts.

Vehicle control should be our number one priority in civilized society.
Banning assault vehicles is only the first step.
An assault vehicle has a capacity of more than one passenger and a caliber of more than 2m.
Licensing and regulating the ownership and operation of assault vehicles is not stopping criminals from accessing them and carrying out tragic events like this one. Only when all assault vehicles are off the streets can we begin to feel safe.
Same here. I would say that people in this area are bad drivers - or simply reckless drivers. I have driven in many countries throughout Europe and the Middle East. While drivers in those countries are what I would describe as aggressive, the drivers here on the East Coast are what I would describe as stupid and careless.
Thanks for weighing in on the side of hope in human nature-—although I’d bet against the charitable interpretation.
Rough odds on it not being culpable? One in three?
