Russia is dusting off antique tanks from the 1940s, monitor group says, as its losses mount in Ukraine

Russia has taken tanks from the 1940s out of storage, according to new images from a monitoring group, as it continues to lose large numbers of tanks in Ukraine.

The Conflict Intelligence Team, a group that monitors Russia's military, shared images of the antique tanks on a train.

It said that the images show T-54 tanks, which the Soviet Union started producing in 1947, moving west from the far east of Russia.

While other old tanks have been used by Russia in Ukraine, none have been as old as the T-54, the group said.

Next they’ll be saying Russia has to use 100 year old bolt-action rifles.

For an amazing, well done, and completely true depiction of the Ukraine / Russia history, PLEASE find and watch the movie Mr. Jones. It is the true story of Gareth Jones, one of the bravest persons who did not pick up a gun, but refused to lie. At first he was fascinated by the economic figures coming out of the Soviet Union in the early 1930’s. He managed to get to the Ukraine in the middle of the Terror Famine. The evil New York Times Duranty is portrayed perfectly, as are the Soviets. It is on Prime right now, and probably elsewhere.

If you wonder how Putin reaches around the world to kill people, watch the movie.

It is possible and even probable that Ukraine has more battle ready tanks captured from Russia than the Russians have.

It is also likely that the number of captured Russian Tanks exceeds the 330 tanks to be donated to Ukraine by NATO

It seems like the only country winning here is China. They are basically disarming their two biggest world rivals. We’re using up our reserves supplying/fighting a war with no national interest at stake and Russia is down to pulling old crap from the far east. Who might the Russians be facing off against in the far east?

Looting the museums to arm the military? Has it come to that?

If Israel breaks out David’s slingshot, it’s all over.

Really? I don’t see NATO aircraft, cruise missiles, or masses of modern armor and long range shells.

They are fighting against Filene’s Basement. The good stuff is still in Germany.

Update on Russian military operations in Ukraine for March 23, 2023:

- Russian forces continue encircling the fortified cities of Bakhmut and now Avdeevka, two major points along Ukraine's defense line in the Donbass;

- Ukraine is gearing up for its upcoming offensive, carrying out drone strikes on Crimea and reconnaissance by force along the line of contact in Zaporozhye;

- the stated goal of Ukraine according to Western reports is to cut the land-bridge between Crimea and the rest of Russia, though that would hardly isolate Crimea entirely;

- Ukraine would suffer immense losses, just as they did during the Kharkov /Kherson offensives last year, with the addition of many more Russian troops and extensive defensive works created months in advance;

- The US and EU are surging remaining stockpiles of artillery ammunition to Ukraine ahead of the offensive to sustain 2-4 months of intense fighting. Once depleted it will take years for the West to restore these stockpiles;

- Russian shell production appears to have exceeded Western output as early as 2014-2015 and has continuously increased since meaning Russia's ability to regenerate combat power exceeds the West's at this moment;

Speed takes a back seat to KIAs. Zelenskyy has sent more than 200,000 Ukrainian men and Polish Half Men to their death. Make it stop.

This war is helping the West and America and their allies to improve their weapons situation and warfighting capabilities.

Look at what the West is replacing these old stocks with and how the countries are firing up their weapons manufacturing base, all while increasing weapons sales and foreign markets while the Russians are depleting and losing foreign markets.

T-54s were designed in the 1940s but were in service for a very, very long time, into the 1980s.

Not just Shermans but remember we sent Ivan something like 250,000 Studebaker deuce and a half trucks in WW II. They must have a few of those in deep storage?

They will win if they start using T-34s.

In Korea the Shermans easily bested the "legendary" T-34's. The "legendary" Tiger was designed as an armoured anti-tank gun to stop T-34's, which were an okay tank, but probably inferior to the Sherman. In terms of protection and firepower, the Sherman was about equal to the Panzer III and Panzer IV. While not having the armour or firepower of the Tiger, the Tiger was unreliable and slow. It was a defensive weapon, designed to wait for and stop attacking tanks. It was not nearly as effective on offense. The Russians actually were dragging out some museum pieces, but I thought they were decoys, intended to draw fire from Javelins, which are more valuable than a decoy tank.
