The total number of Russian deaths in Ukraine is likely to have exceeded all fatalities in 16 of the nation's military actions since the Second World War, it has been claimed.
The rate of soldiers being killed per month in the first year of the war was 25 times higher than in Chechnya and 35 times higher than in the Soviet Union's ten-year war in Afghanistan, a US think-tank said.
It is thought Russian troops are dying at five times the rate of Ukrainians, at a total of around 70,000.
The Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said Russia suffered between 13,000 and 25,000 deaths in the two Chechen wars – meaning the numbers killed in Ukraine in a year could be five times greater than those killed in Chechnya over almost 15 years.
Those killed in the initial attack on Ukraine in February last year included elite regiments, now being replenished with reluctant recruits with little training and poor equipment.

The Soviets didn’t fight that much after WWII, the Afghan War was not that bloody.

More Russian soldiers may have died during the current battle of Bakhmut than the entire Soviet war in Afghanistan.

Anyone with a seven-year-old’s understanding of causality can conclude that CSIS would, in the aggregate, promote the expansion of the military and surveillance state, since that’s who pays their bills; what the Times did was reveal a specific, rather direct example, using heretofore secret documents.

WWII set a pretty high bar for Russian casualties. Doing the math they averaged over 2K dead a day from 1941 to 1945.
Correction: that’s the ISW. But CSIS shares the same motives: profiting from endless wars.

The sources were 32% corporate, 29% foundation, 19% government, 9% individuals, 5% endowment, and 6% other. CSIS had operating expenses of US$32.2 million for 2013 — 78% for programs, 16% for administration, and 6% for development.[34]
In September 2014, The New York Times reported that the United Arab Emirates had donated a sum greater than $1 million to the organization. Additionally, CSIS has received an undisclosed amount of funding from Japan through the government-funded Japan External Trade Organization, as well as from Norway.
After being contacted by the Times, CSIS released a list of foreign state donors, listing 13 governments including those of Germany and China.[35] The Center for Strategic and International Studies CSIS lists major funding from defense contractors such as Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, General Dynamics, and General Atomics.[36]
Significant funding has come from the governments of Japan, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates.[37]
