Matt Hancock wanted to “deploy” a new Covid variant to “frighten the pants off” the public and ensure they complied with lockdown, leaked messages seen by The Telegraph have revealed.
The Lockdown Files – more than 100,000 WhatsApp messages sent between ministers, officials and others – show how the Government used scare tactics to force compliance and push through lockdowns.
In another message Simon Case, the Cabinet Secretary, said that “the fear/ guilt factor” was “vital” in “ramping up the messaging” during the third national lockdown in Jan 2021.
In a WhatsApp conversation on Dec 13, obtained by The Telegraph, Damon Poole - one of Mr Hancock’s media advisers - informed his boss that Tory MPs were “furious already about the prospect” of stricter Covid measures and suggested “we can roll pitch with the new strain”.
The comment suggested that they believed the strain could be helpful in preparing the ground for a future lockdown and tougher restrictions in the run-up to Christmas 2020.
Mr Hancock then replied: “We frighten the pants off everyone with the new strain.”
Mr Poole agreed, saying: “Yep that’s what will get proper bahviour [sic] change.”
The discussion came two days after Mr Hancock was informed of the emergence of a new variant – known as alpha or the Kent variant, in Dec 2020. A surge in cases later led to the effective cancellation of Christmas on Dec 19.
Mr Hancock expressed his worry that talks over Brexit would dominate headlines and reduce the impact, and probed Mr Poole for his media advice. “When do we deploy the new variant,” asked Mr Hancock.

Ignoring whether the purported conversations are true or not, the idea that you can introduce a virus and it will have the predicted effects is ludicrous. The other point is, as one scientist on the Dark Horse podcast pointed out, if I wanted to design a way to force a virus to evolve into ever deadlier and more transmissible forms, then I’d introduce exactly the same mRNA vaccine regimen that is being used now. (Because each infected person has multiple variants, and the vaccine wipes out only a specific set of variants leaving the others to be transmitted.)

Everyone needs to realize: if someone is making an appeal to your emotions, it’s because they don’t have a good argument to appeal your reason. Just reject those types of emotional arguments out of hand, and usually, you can also reject whatever the person making that kind of argument is selling.

If the telegraph was comprised of actual journalists - and if the story truly had merit - this story would have details EVERYWHERE.
It does not. Huge grain of salt, folks, particularly since they’re conflating Brexit’s ‘project fear’ with these whatsapp message leaks.
Frankly, in contrast to the unfolding story on fauci & the paper he approved on ‘origins’, this story meets all the criteria for BS.

Eisenhower warned us of government institutions taking our government from us. He just thought it was the military back then because that was what he knew of best. He had no idea that what he feared most would spread its roots into every single government agency from the Border Agency to the CDC, school lunches, gas appliances, and Healthcare.
Some of us should be very proud that we defied the “authorities”. I and my house are. Proud, relieved and justified.

The reference is to the alpha strain (a/k/a the “Kent strain”, B.1.1.7) which was first isolated in SE England in December 2020.
The reference “deploy” by Hancock refers to when/how to make the announcement so as to maximize fear, and use the fear to drive restrictions.
It does not mean that the British (and especially not Matt Hancock) created it.
