Despite the record-breaking scale of the blizzard pummeling Lake Tahoe, it seems some drivers are still a bit confused about the conditions of the area’s roads — or at least that’s the takeaway from some of the increasingly direct messaging coming from area CHP and sheriffs' offices around the Tahoe Basin.
Officials in surrounding areas of the Sierra Nevada issued equally direct messages for drivers, including the Mono County Sheriff's Office, which told drivers Tuesday morning: “The roads are closed. All of them. There is no alternate route, back way, or secret route. It's a blizzard, people. You cannot see your hand in front of your face, let alone a snow stake to guide your way. Stay home."
As of Tuesday morning, the Central Sierra Snow Lab field station on Donner Pass reported 52.2 inches of snowfall in the previous 48 hours, and conditions are supposed to only intensify before eventually tapering off Wednesday morning.

Many, many moons ago, we were done with a great Tahoe ski trip, and the snow just kept on comin’. The regular, main roads heading West, Hwy 50 and 80, were closed due to multiple avalanches. Before they closed both roads, we had driven far enough West that turning around did not make sense. We found a small tavern still open, and waited there. There were many others in the tavern in the same state. Eventually, CalTrans snowplowed the old Hwy 50 road, and the Highway Patrol escorted groups of cars over the summit. It took 11 hours to get home. Back then, EVERYONE thought the next Ice Age was just around the bend. Two weeks ago, the Kalifornia Sierra snowpack was at 250% of normal, but they will still flush most of the snowmelt out to the ocean, and maintain the ‘drought’ due to not enough water.
My Tahoe buddy, Aaron Hagar (Sammy’s kid), is in Cabo right now - grumbling with a big smile in his voice about how he’s gonna need to extend his break. Poor guy.
If you are not supposed to drink house paint why do they name some of the colors after fruits and vegatables???
Right, we're too busy building choo choo trains to nowhere. But even if this stupid state try to build more dams, the econazis would fight endlessly to make it unfeasible. They don't want sound water policy. They want depopulation.
Back in my Air Force days a fellow I worked with told me his wife was upset with him the previous evening, and he didn't get a very good supper.
I asked what he had, and he replied "Cold shoulder and hot tongue".
BAHAHAHAAH!!!!
SOME of the “Snow stakes’ on I-80 over Donner are over 10 feet tall & are buried.
My brother was up there about six weeks ago. He barely made
it out in before a new front rolled in with very high winds.
These milder winters are one benefit of global warming.
Har...
Mount Washington just logged the coldest wind chill factor
ever recorded there.
The record for the Central Sierra in terms of snowpack was 67 feet in 1951. We might not get there this year but it might get close. Ski season will go all the way to Memorial Day for some of the resorts, maybe even longer.
Oh now, that’s BAD!
But,funny!
Sounds like the possibility of a win-win situation there. Start building reservoirs. When the greenies self-identify by fighting it, depopulate them. Rinse and repeat. Eventually the reservoirs are built and the greenies ae depopulated. Everybody wins! Everybody got what they wanted!
The previous wind chill record was shattered overnight, when wind chills dropped to -108.4 degrees at different points on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Good post. I like the way you think.
Have a look at this video of the Donner pass area. Absoulutely amazing. Homes with only their doors showing. Telephone lines lower than the snow levels. Roads to homes like tunnels through the snow. Incredible.
That’s a wee bit nippy.
Gretta Thudbug couldn’t be reached for comment. /s
Holy smokes!!!
That’s a ton of snow. Too bad Kali doesn’t have their act together, they could eliminate their drought.
Awesome footage...
How many years of above average snow pack will it take to fill reservoirs?
