Election Day in Chicago: Everything you need to know about Tuesday’s vote for mayor, City Council and police district council

Chicago voters will be casting ballots for mayor, members of the City Council and, for the first time in city history, members of police district councils on Tuesday.

Early voting —both in person and by mail — has been ongoing for weeks. But if you haven’t made your choices yet, we have organized our coverage to help you make up your mind. We have scores of stories about the mayoral race and the nine candidates running for mayor, including incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot. We also have tackled the biggest of the 50 aldermanic races, as well as a primer on the police councils. What’s more, we have everything you need to know about the process of voting.

While it might feel like it has been a long road getting here, we won’t be done after the ballots are cast in this election. In the races for mayor and City Council, if no single candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two vote getters will face off again in a runoff five weeks later, on April 4. So save some of that energy. We’re all going to need it.

Be sure to bookmark chicagotribune.com/elections to read our full election coverage on Tuesday and get live results.

Is Dominion “counting” the votes?

All the candidates who are not Lori Lightfoot promise to get tough on crime, by spending more money on cops who can arrest bad guys. None of them have spoken out against the no-cash bail law that was supposed to go into place on 1/1, but has been delayed because of court cases. And none of them have explained how they will prevent the Cook County prosecutor (Kim Fox) from letting bad guys off with little or no prosecution.

So what? Everybody wants to spend more money to get the same results. Lori is coming across as the fiscal conservative.

Paul Valas is most likely going to win on a tough on crime sales pitch then get murdered by the SEIU and Chicago Teachers Union in the operations of the machine.

Chicago politics is a plaything of two non city employee unions that cannot run themselves, everyone else is positioning themselves to get out with ill-gotten gains. In the 2000, the last generation of politician moved out, 2010s were the corporations and rich boys moving out, 2020s will be the north shore widows selling their properties off to absentee owners in foreign lands.

“I probably wouldn’t bother to vote if I lived in Chicago.”

I lived in the actual city of Minneapolis for several decades before getting out in ‘14.

In the municipal elections, I voted for the Democrat (Republicans were a no-show) that would likely make me sick only 90% of the time vs one who would make me sick 100% of the time.

Some would say that this was a distinction without a difference and I couldn’t disagree with them - but I wanted to at least have a say in the matter.
