When Morrill High School (Nebraska) coach April Ott broke the news to Katrina Kohel that she was the only one left on the cheer squad, she promised her that even if she couldn’t compete at the state tournament, they could still enjoy the whole experience.
They’d get fun coffee drinks, watch the more than 2,700 girls and 225 teams compete in the three-day cheer and dance competition in Grand Island and just have a good time.
But Kohel, the lone senior on what had been a squad of four, had other ideas. After talking it over with her mom, Della, she decided she had nothing to lose.
“I want to go to state, and I will cheer by myself,” she told her coach.
And that’s what she did.

ABSOLUTELY was about individual effort, self confidence, perseverance and courage. Good on her. She will do well. She is Somebody.
Snowflake, me? Hahaha, i’m an ancient glacier. You’re misattributing the original quote that i was referencing. (I didn’t “quote “ it. Analog Guy. )
“Sports are actually very useful and beneficial to young people .”
Given the current absence of common sense, structure, rules, guidelines, and freaking decency, sports are an activity where efforts can be rewarded. Even if just showing up for a participation trophy.
Have had cheerleaders show up years later as student doctors. Let me tell you , without a doubt, every one had solid comportment and self worth. And daggum fit and good looking daughters. (Yes, i am a dinosaur)
myopic ignorance
Great phrase describing the most common condition of average bean-headed people.
Stupidity and Ignorance are contagious. Even here on FR, no longer sacrosanct.

By your tagline alone, you get it.
Keep the faith.
My wife ran track in high school. Her resulting slimness and physical fitness when I met her were factors of attraction.
“Keep the faith.”
Always.
“The fact the MSM doesn’t tell us makes me wonder about the “hero” narrative being presented.”
It could also be a case of a coach and her “special” cheerleader. You know, going to State and having “fun coffee drinks” together.
Something has been left out and we will never know what it is.
Bless her.
The premise I reacted to stated Sports is a “totally useless waste of time”. Clearly it is not. The aerobic nature of cheer leading likewise makes it a positive practice for girls who wish to be physically fit. One should strive to have a strong body and a strong mind. A weak body too often correlates to a weak mind.
Sports, at least used to be about learning teamwork and working together.
